Against melee as a warlock

so do i bend over and spread my cheeks or should i flounder around like a fish before they kill me?

Seriously, what do I do? They have more gap closers than I have portals, half the time the jackasses will get to me as im setting up my portals, and they all have multiple, multiple ways to interrupt my casts without even using interrupts. This is ALL while doing obscene damage.

I dont understand why this is ok. I just dont get to play my class when a melee gets on me. there is no back and forth. there is just die. The only time I actually beat melee comps is when they are stupid enough to let me free cast. Yes, affliction is insane damage, but it takes no thought, no skill, no brain at all to frothingly slam your keyboard in my direction. Its too much damage, too much mobility, and too much soft/hard interrupts all in one package. Meanwhile the most we warlocks have gotten for the longest time is soul burn demonic teleport for mobility. Everything else is old old old outdated tech.

So ill take any copium or doomer posts. tell me how to deal with the mongoloid mouth breathers before I lose my mind.

most gap closers dont go through los so you can often just soul burn port and line their gap closer and creat alot of distance. After they connect again you can fear or stun them or gate away or soulrip or amp curse or wall it really just depends on the situation.

This is a good example of a warlock just abusing melees with their endless rotation of defensives:

did you timestamp this? so far at the timestamp hes being trained even after port, being saved by disc being a broken healer, and then they give up and let him free cast.

Edit: actually i was watching this the other day mb. but i dont see him using amp curse.

hes never casting fear and only gets to throw dots and procs around until he walls or has them change on his dk partner.

its really bad. I seriously think the disc priest being overtuned just covers for the warlock a ton.

What is?

when they focus him hes basically unable to do anything. if they swap off he can do great damage but if they dont, hes stuck with instant casts…

It really is horrible. Not to mention priests are still stuck with 2004 mobility. I hate it.

Most of destros damage rn all instant casts……

this works well vs anything but a dk, right now if u see a dk you are screw thats all

idk why so many new wizard players have this idea that you should be able to outrun them when it doesnt matter

they get hit with a no modifier mortal strike and start to tweak out

Other casters have it worse. Shadow Priest have to spend more time hard casting, dont have Port, Gate, no Slows, while also doing less damage.

The only class that should feel completely impossible to do anything against, should be DKs.

Mage isn’t even the only caster with more mobility than Boomkin :dracthyr_lulmao: and I’d be totally fine with that if we could LIVE vs anything without having to fold into Bear Form to do zero damage and literally NEGATIVE self-healing. We’re the only caster without a big shield or an immunity of any sort… so we should be… balanced, accordingly. Besides all that, our core class talent tree and spec mechanics are a complete abomination. We take 6 GCDs to even START to TRY and burst on a single target, and that’s so easily shut down, or even just dispelled, which sets us back 2 GCDs PER TARGET at minimum (though that’s not new, just an outdated design IMO).
The best we can do is cycle Cyclone DRs, on enemy CDs, all the time, while standing back and PvE DPSing (Zzz)
I bet if that and our AoE (cuz we scale in BGs) were nerfed a bit, and then our survivability and our ST damage were buffed… we’d be much more fun to play as, with, or against.

This season is truly off to a harrowing start for casters (but that’s not new either. At least gearing w/ Vers will help)
I hope we’ll see improvements, even if just tuning soon. This coming week, and then 11.0.5 are a decent start, but we need more.
#nerf mobility, utility, and burst shenanigans across the board (I’ve been saying this since Dragonflight S1 - the hard-CC nerf was the most anti-PvP change ever)
Not every melee needs 5 gap closers, an MS effect, and 7 micro-CCs and 1000000000000 pets that clog up the screen, CC and DC you lol… nor do casters though. If I manage to stand and cast more, or pool resources, that should reward with more damage (I think Spenders for all specs are too weak, and resources are too abundant). With that being said, the game shouldn’t be about a Jedi v Vulcan mind competition just to trigger pre-cog.

Play impish instincts, put down your port & gateway, use them actively on enemy CDs.

Dark pact high.

try to rotate trinket+port & your wall vs major cds. Jinx honor talent can be useful to get dots up without casting. So long as you have instants up, you should be okay and you’ll generate comparable pressure by just dotting, rotting, and lining with your instant shadowbolts.

soulburn+port and los the melee on their cds can stop usually half+ of their damage.

Disc priest + aff is probably the best 2v2 comp and it’s insanely broken, so that’s got some truth to it. However, it’s not like aff can’t be incredibly successfulk without another healer.

Sure, but also if melee miss a kick and give precog then you can kill an entire team uninterrupted. You could try playing a melee into aff+healer and see how frustrating it is.

Exactly. If it’s not their cds and you’re on DR it’s perfectly okay to tank and dish out damage.

Sorry, but all I read are user errors.

When you can’t handle your warlock against all those evil melees, even though your class is totally overtuned and melee shut down options got nerfed to be nearly non existent during the last few expansions, you should look out for a new spec/class.

Just as a reminder:

  • Most wizards do mostly instant casts - no interrupts possible.
  • Most wizards got several schools, so you can always cast something, even when interrupted
  • They implemented Precog which you can play around and abuse it
  • They nerfed melee interrupt cd to 15 secs, up from 10 secs
  • They nerfed interrupt duration from 4 to 3 secs
  • They nerfed duration of most melee stuns and/or increased their cooldown
  • They removed BE silence and made additional interrupt options like Grip to be on the GCD.

When you still don’t get casts out, even though wizards in general but especially locks are currently dominating PvP, there is nothing the devs can do for you. If they make it even more wizard friendly, there is no reason left to play a melee on top ratings.

What? lmao

wizards wont stop until melee passively move at 50% movement speed with no mobility cds at all

Okay, not to be rude, but where did that even come from in this thread?
Did someone else mention mage or boomy and I missed it?

Yes, boomy is very bad now and part of the reason for that is very poor durability. However, it has always had poor durability and been plenty survivable because of cyclone.

boomy also has the only undispelable CC as well as the ability to permanently remove any snare/root. Further, barkskin SHOULD be a weak defensive because it’s got a fairly long duration and can be used while stunned.

Yes. Needs ret-level rework tbh (not powerlevel, obviously).

I feel like we’re really underselling how strong boomy has been the past 2 entire expansions. Also, just gonna casually ignore bash & root beam on top of cyclone? Boomy is one of the only classes that can triple cross a team by itself, man…

HUH?! Aff and frost mage are insanely broken; just as broken if not moreso (I personally think more so) than fury/unholy/rogue/mm/feral.

With the exception of mages who I think have one blink too many, I think that overall game mobility is in a pretty good spot and allows for skill expression for and against.

Fair enough. maybe I’m judging the charts too harshly, but they sorta speak for themselves. Like I said, Vers gearing + tuning should help balance things out.

A bunch of specs were mentioned… To the point of vsing melee cleaves/lobbies as a caster, It’s obviously not just Warlock that’s having issues currently.
Honestly, maybe that’s just a queue pool issue (but good luck to trying a system fix vs that, as we’ll see 1hr+ queues LOL)

True. I wish it were otherwise, as I said – I think it’ll be more fun for everyone.

Fair enough.

The past is the past. Balancing the classes should be sought at every time
and it’s not anyone’s fault that :dracthyr_a1: lizz sees PvP as a mini-game…

Not ignoring them at all. Our utility and burst are super strong. Our recovery is just botched (I’d say bugged, actually) right now, so it’s safer to just stand back and nuke to dictate the positioning to your advantage – to then execute meaningful CC setups.

Fair enough. Again, it depends.
If we look at the charts though, unsuprisingly as it has been the case over the past several expansions, it’s pretty much unshifted in that regard.

(See the Ven chart video from 3 days ago)
I don’t see how the argument can be made that melee don’t just have a technical advantage (since post-WoD reworks, let’s be real), even if it’s not night and day. WHY did the team feel like pre-cog was necessary if not to help casting VS all the micro-CC they added for PvE (M+ pack disruption) reasons?
I think all the power creeps can be explained by PvE-focused changes tbh.

I can accept that. I’ve been having fun with it myself. It just doesn’t feel particularly good esp. when you shuffle vs a team that can just bulk outrun and circle the map though, pillaring is quite a cowardly & boring tactic. Maybe the anti-self-recovery changes of the past year or two have helped with that a bit, but now we have things like Second Wind returned LOL.
I guess the argument here can be made against the bracket rather than the mechanics, and I can accept that line as well.

it would be crazy if wizards could be touched

I’d be OK with melee being a threat when they hit, if casters were a threat by actually being able to cast things, and those spells would hit hard enough to justify their time.
As it stands nowadays, melee can just keep sticking to their target, and casters do everything instantly and keep kiting to counteract that… And so these things are buffed again and again… and it becomes a cat & mouse.
IMO it’s unfun. Makes me miss MoP.
