I’m admittedly a bit of a chatty kathy, but it’s CRAZY to me that NOBODY seems to ever type in chat. Not one word in any of the dungeons I’ve queued for. It just seems so… isolating. I seen plenty of folks running around, but it feels oddly lonely.
Definitely hope MoP picks things up, because man, the game is NOT fun when everyone is dead silent.

Because it’s basically retail. Retail isn’t an MMO.
No one types in chat anymore because there was this wonderful invention called Discord. Why would I type during a dungeon or raid when I can simply talk to my group with a headset? This is like asking why no one rides horse and buggies anymore.
It’s because cata has gdkps allowed. When the #1 raid system on servers is about making $$$ and forcing people to raid in a way they don’t just to keep up means people raid log and don’t feel like interacting with anyone else.
Massive contrast to sod where people actually get to enjoy the game and raid anyway they want. Much more alive.
Guess this lines up with blizzards findings on gdkps eroding social structures.
I heard that gdkp’s poisoned our water supply, burned our crops and delivered a plague unto our houses(or maybe you’re ill)
I wouldn’t be surprised aye, they will do whatever it takes to make $$

It’s long been my belief that a good part of this is RDF. You don’t have interact with anybody to form a group and you don’t have that awkward space to fill while you travel to the dungeon. Combine that with the fact that dungeons are a daily task that people just want to get through, the culture is just drop in, do the dungeon and leave.
Unfortunately this is something that persists all the way through until Legion when they start making you form groups and running to the dungeon for M+. Once that happens that time period between group formation and starting the content returns, and it just gives people an opportunity to engage with each other to fill the time. Not always, but sometimes.
Also, in retail, I did used to be able to bring out some groups while leveling through RDF by just being nice and asking how everybody was doing. In Cata I couldn’t really do this, people seemed less inclined to talk. Not really sure why that is but I definitely noticed it.
Best thing you can do for yourself is two things…

Its called sarcasm pops. OP is clearly behind the times if he thinks people dont talk in game anymore. We still do. We just dont use archaic means like typing in a chatbox when better tools have been available since teamspeak. Get with the times already .
If you want interactions? Play on the Anniversary server. Classic is where socializing is valued.
I now disabled all public chat channels after I was suspended/muted for talking back against nightslayer players in AV when they joked about PvE players with those meme texts. Nowadays people are so touchy and will report you for whatever reason they find personally offensive. Some people are just more sensitive than others and we now all have to behave like children to cater to their sensitivity. I myself never or rarely curse in real life or in game but I don’t care about other people cursing or whatever, live and let live.
