This sadly wasnt a rumor. It was one of the first “pvp with the devs” and dks stomped them. The leading week had heavy nerfs across the board.

Frost- tanking was great, dps was meh.
Blood- tanking was king, dps was king when geared through the teeth.
Unholy- dual wield auto attack city until you got the leggo.
Id rather press buttons than fall asleep auto attacking.
The original DK was designed and first iterated during BC. They always start development early or they used to. Not sure now.
Original WoTLK was release in Nov 2008.
Ion Hazzikostos came to work for Blizzard in 2008.
They started retarding DK all the way through wrath. It was still fun to play but that’s when it all started, they started messing around with the shadow damage on SS during Ulduar, nerfing it and making it more physical damage. It actually ended up during one patch where SS wasn’t even Unholy main hit, we had to switch to obliterate. Thats right unholy had oblit back then. By the time ICC main progression was done, that is to say the most progressive back then had it beat, they went and killed armor pen, which killed the blood spec.
Blizz realized they had a tank shortage because the expansion was long, and a lot of folks were getting burned out. So, they decided to make blood a tank only spec, which still I think was very dumb. I miss old blood dps spec, and old unholy for that matter.
Just a bit of DK history for you.
They turned scourge strike from all shadow to physical / shadow because there was nothing to increase it’s damage other than strength. Then it scaled with armor pen after the change.
Cata is when blood went tank.
When it was full shadow it hit harder because of the multipliers that it had. I can’t remember exactly but I know it hit harder. Then it went part physical/shadow. It doesn’t matter really though. My point is they started scrooging DK in Wrath.

I honestly get original and classic mixed. Didnt frost use armor pen as well? I thought only unholy didnt
