As a new warlock, can someone breakdown in general what demons I should be using on what?
They all parse the same. Imp might differ slightly but not by a material amount. Use pets for utility and flavor.
PvE
-
Imp is good in instanced content for dispels. If you are a noob, you can put it on auto cast for it to dispel the first harmful effect cast on you.
-
VW…let’s not talk about blue berry and his fall from grace
-
Felhunter is anti caster, but generally good across all content. Its purge can be very impactful in Mythic+ specifically
-
Succubus is great for solo content. You get essentially an additional fear. It also has a perma snare/slow built in. Not bad for world content or tough dungeons where a stray mob needs to be crowd controled.
PvP (note that the meta right now is to take Grimoire of Sacrifice)
-
Imp is super niche but that self dispel on a separate gcd can be really powerful depending on the matchup. For example, dispelling a Ret’s HoJ so you don’t sit a stun and take big damage.
-
VW…again let’s not go here. Only roll with it if you wanna sac for its Stam buff spell
-
Felhunter is the default pet for PvP these days. Spell lock and purge is too valuable to not have at the ready. They are good in a lot of scenarios.
-
Succubus is a little niche but not a bad runner up to Felhunter. Great for general control with the snare and charm spell. Careful though, Seduce shares a Diminishing Return with Fear so you need to use it wisely.
Hope this helps!
Back in the day, Succubus/Incubus used to do a smidge more dps than the other demons so we ran that one on Patchwerk-style fights. On most modern encounters, however, the decision is just Imp vs Felhunter. You run Imp as default (but always if your targets change often or the boss moves a lot) and you run Felhunter if you need to interrupt/purge.
So out in the world questing, does everyone run with VW?
I end up using felhunter 99% of the time for the interrupt. If it’s a fight where I don’t need it I’ll switch to imp.
Void Walker for solo content.
Fel Hunter for group content (or if solo content has a mob with a particularly nasty spell that absolutely needs to be interrupted) and PVP.
Although if I’m in a group I probably have Grimoire of Sac. I always use Sac on the Fel Hunter.
They all do the same DPS. It’s purely a utility pick.
(Well technically Imp can do a little more because it’s ranged so it doesn’t deal with a couple of mechanics. But that’s super niche information)
Oh, is the information that the Sayaad doing little bit more than the other demons outdated?
VW in open world (in either AFF or DESTRO), just remember to heal it with health funnel if its health gets low. It has an AOE threat generator that is useful for packs of mobs to keep them off you (within reason). It’s what I use for AOE pulls in open world or delves.
If you run demo you use Felguard ONLY. but it’s a pretty stout tank at upper levels with a taunt for single targeting mobs. In AOE packs that can get tricky as the other mobs will head toward you once you tag them. the benefit is that you can do your regular rotation and dps down mobs pretty fast. It’s a nice spec for elite mobs that are mostly single target.
Don’t forget health stones and health funnel are super useful.
You don’t need to use demons as Aff of Destruction as you can go Grimoire of Sacrifice even for PvE. Whether or not you are using Sacrifice it remains the same. (Demo always uses Felguard)
Dungeons you should almost always use Felhunter as that gives you an interrupt.
Raiding Felhunter if you need to interrupt otherwise you can go Imp for a magic cleanse utility or Succubus if they could CC a mechanic or add. If you are using Sacrifice you can also sac your Voidwalker for temporary maximum health increase.
Open world people say use Voidwalker but it can hardly hold agro, I just use Sacrifice and just blast away.
For Solo Delves I recommend going Demo because Felguard holds agro VERY well.
For PvP it all depends on the comp and if you are in Arena or BG’s.
