Aff Lock fantasy?

I’ve been wondering lately, which is the magic origin of Affliction spells?
Is it void magic? Shadow Priest got that, and it doesn’t seem to resort to madness or something alike. Though there’s antecedent of the Burning Legion messing with the Void. And there’s obviously our Voidwalker friend.
Maybe it’s a weird application of fel magic that allows to drain and manipulate souls? As we’ve seen on Argus with their soul engines?
Perhaps Death magic? Is it some kind of “mild necromancy”? Maybe something like the Drust magic? Or something like the magic the Mogu use?

Remember the cinematic where the undead warlock just waves his hand and all the murlocks die even though he has zombie parkinsons or w/e? That.

Affliction as traditionally been the warlocks ability to utilize shadow magic.
Shadow magic in itself is a manifestation of energies from the void.

Entities that live in the void are Old gods and Void Lords.

However, do note that these apply to only affliction spells.
Some of the other warlock spells may not necessarily be stemmed in void magic, such as armor spells, the ability to summon demons and the now lost life tap.

These are usually expressions of one form of fel and demonic magic.

Nah I always pictured that to be destruction.

Warlocks used to have strong dots that would make people stop and fight, or heal themselves up because otherwise they would rot away. Now our dots are super weak and we have to constantly spam them on top of whatever filler we have to hope to get another player to half health.

We used to be tanky too, so to that when melee charged at our faces we could handle it and run away until our dots took him off, slow him down with curse of exhaustion and he could barely keep up.

Our healing and utlity was actually better before. We had demonic portal baseline, which allowed us to teleport whenever we were in death’s grip, and the best thing about it was that we had to premeditate it, so it had skill. Now its a stupid talent with a bunch of other choices. We had fel armor baseline which healed us based on our damage. We also had drain life, and drain mana, which honestly could make a comeback now seeming as though mana is barely a problem for healers in pvp unless the fight has been going on for way too long. Mortal coil was also baseline, known as death coil at the time.
We also had howl of terror, which was also a great aoe fear. We were literally all about fears and curses. Our curses were so much fun, we had a bunch and only one curse could be used at a time, so you had to think about which curse worked for which moments.

Not to mention we haven’t gotten one new pet yet. Why couldnt we get a new demon summon in legion or bfa? Since we havent had a new one since felguard. If you want to count the glyphs, but those change our current rather than fill a new niche.

I wish warlocks got more attention to what TRULY makes it great. This affliction is okay, but its only a shell of what it used to be.

the aff fantasy was setting people on as many types of fire as possible while using souls to empower yourself. cursing them with intense pain, corrupting them with fel magic, slowly siphoning their life away, making them go insane by haunting them with the souls of your victims, all the while you’re draining away their soul, empowering yourself with Soulburn or Reap Souls.

now it’s all about being a void themed builder/spender bolt caster with some dots added in, like shadow but less fun

How warlocks used to be aside (which i agree with most of the points raised), warlocks don’t just use 1 type of magic.

Every warlock uses some form of fel magic, cause fel is destructive and entropic in nature. Examples include Demon armor and life-tap or any spells that sacrifices something to gain a benefit. Demons are summoned using soul shards from the twisting nether, a region where the void and light clash resulting in creations of it’s own realm (usually demons summoned by warlock)
Once again, this is a form of fel magic due to the sacrifice needed to gain the ability to have a demon out.

What makes affliction it’s own spec and spells are the nature of the spells.
How is unstable affliction, corruption, agony and siphon life fel based?
They’re all shadow based and shadow magic stems from the void.

Hope this clears up.
