Advice on upgrade

Hey y’all. I am a little confused on what to upgrade on my PC next. I play WoW predominantly with an occasional other game thrown in. I keep reading WoW is CPU bound game but I am not sure. My current build is

CPU : Ryzen 3600
Motherboard : MSI B450 Tomahawk
Ram : GSkill Flare X 3200 CL14 16gb
GPU : Gigabyte 1660 Super
Storage SSDs
PSU : Corsair CM650X

So I was thinking either upgrading Mobo/CPU or GPU but which one is the best bang for buck for WoW? Thank y’all for any help

I’m not an expert by any means, but it seems like you’re already well over specs for WoW. My PC is a step or three down on all fronts, and I’m running the game on near-max graphics with with no dip in FPS (caveat - I tend to keep bloom and particles down, mainly because I find them distracting as heck with two L’s).

Are you having a specific issue with your current rig? Or do you want to keep up with newer games? If the latter, I’d go with as much of a GPU upgrade as the power supply will allow.

Thanks man. Yea I run mostly near max with certain things turned down or off that I don’t like. I do have my FPS capped but sometimes it does go a little below. I am going to eventually upgrade both as I save money but was just wondering which would benefit WoW more especially if I decide to start raiding

I’d be looking for a GPU upgrade once stock comes up. The 1660 Super is fine, and can run WoW at 1080p very easily and even 1440p to an extent - but in other games (like CP2077) or other newer titles you’ll want more GPU horsepower.

Depending on what your display is, of course. That may be what you want to upgrade instead.

Yea currently just running 1080 60hz.

Yep, that’s the first thing to upgrade that will give you the biggest tangible difference.

Cool so is 1440p worth it in WoW? Have been thinking about it but just didn’t think my GPU would push 1440

I think it is. You might not get the best framerates all the time and also in other games, but you’ll get some benefit.

If you were to keep your current monitor and upgrade either your CPU or GPU you’ll really not see any improvement without upgrading your monitor anyway.

So the display is kind of a necessity either way.

There is more to a monitor than resolution so going out and getting the cheapest 1440p monitor you can find may not deliver the visual upgrade you want. If you are moving on from a basic TN panel at 1080p 60hz than sure the upgrade is worthwhile. Many people who play “twitch” style games (multi player shooters & MOBAs) prefer 1080p and high refresh rate monitors and there are many IPS and VA 1080p monitors that will put 1440p monitors to shame.

My point isn’t that you shouldn’t switch but if you are switching from a good 1080p monitor than make sure you are getting a good 1440p monitor otherwise you may be disappointed. If you are going from an old 20-22" TN 1080p 60hz panel than obviously any 1440p will look like an improvement.

I’d switch from a “good” 1080p monitor to a “better” any resolution monitor.

But if you’re on a 1080p/60 monitor, no matter how good it is, a new graphics card won’t help. Not for WoW anyway.

Make your purchase now, supposedly there are part supply issues from Taiwan and Japan that can raise prices soon.
