Advice on tanking needed

I’m wanting to tank or dps for the next expansion. I plan on doing rbg PvP, groups , and raids. I don’t really like healing so I won’t be queuing up as a heal even if the class can. I’m not new to the game just new to tanking. Need opinions on what to pick.

Its all generally good at the level you’re gonna be playing at. You’ll be able to take any tank into all but the highest tiers of M+.

Also we don’t know the final scaling numbers at all

hop on the ptr & make max level tanks and do some content with them & based on what you like choose which one suits you

I would say DH or druid would be your best options, given DH and Druid tends to be a good pick in all options that you want to play in, with a heavy emphasis on DH given they just are typically broken.

Demon Hunter is king right now for M+ and based on the beta so far it seems like that has not changed. It’s also one of the easier tanks to play. So that should definitely be a solid contender for you.

We don’t know tuning but the DPS spec for DH should also be reasonably solid for M+, as all 4 of the new affixes providing damage buffs can be applied to Havoc DH - most specs have 1 or 2 of the 4 that apply to them.

I have no thoughts on PvP right now.

DH Tank is king for M+ because of it’s abundance of CC tools. That means it’s likely going to be less amazing for Raid in comparison, since there’s less that’s able to be CC’d in general. But I don’t have any thoughts on what will be considered good in that area.

Tanks arent viable in pvp due to blizzards tuning them so they cant live forver and their damage is heavily nerfed in any pvp content.

Raid tanking is completely different from m+/dungeeon tanking. Raid tanking is all about being able to survive tank busters, raid positioning and taunt swapping - you need to understand how to co tank.

M+ tanking is more focused on mob control, pull size and speed to cater to any given group comp. Some tanks have clear advantages over others in this department, pretty much making your choice to play something very easy or completely complicated. Some tanks require double the amount of thought and skill than others do for the same level of content.

This really comes down to how you approach the game. Do you want a class that will focus on and excell in a specific type of content - eg a great m+ tank that can also play a dps role in pvp and raids, a pvp god that has the ability to tank, a tank. Or more of a general jack of all trades but master of none.

Any tank is capable of timing a +10 for portals, some just rewquire much more effort than others. Any tank is capable of tanking mythic raids, some just require much more effort than others. Class/spec compisitions of who you play with becomes a large part of this.

A VDH is so op right now because of the amount of cc/utility the provide to a m+ comp pushing the highest level of keys. A Prot Pally is an amazing edition to a m+ team for its utility. Bear having large healthpools + vers buff + brez. Monk with RoP interactions. BDK basically being an unkillable god with a brez. Prot warr having such an insane amount of mitigation and amazing uncapped burst aoe and a huge damage profile (bleeds) that arent reduced by mob armor.

You have to play what you enjoy while thinking about what you want to bring to the table.

As to something that is a master in all pvp, small group and raid play, i have no idea. I dont pvp but as a warrior main i feel confident i have enough to achieve my goals in m+ portals/KSH/AotC and low end mythic raiding as prot and arms. Prot warr also has the advanatge of being legit unkillable in all solo content (pull world boss > find smaller mobs to kill > resets IV > 30% hp on demand heal) - this method does take some time but it works. Spell reflect interactions are some of the most fun i have had in wow in recent times - 18m damage reflects on last boss of HoI, yes please.

Again, do you want to be the fotm meta tank (you will be rerolling diff tanks every time something gets changed) or do you want to be the pvp meta god that can tank when needed (this will limit the level of content you can do but will not limit you from attaining everything outside of m+ titles).

If you are new to tanking and nervous about it, the main spec I’d avoid is Brewmaster. They have a lot of buttons and are finicky.

Bear druid is probably the easiest one to start off with, and so far is looking solid for TWW (subject to change of course)

One of if not the easiest tank is bear, followed by paladin. Stay away from Monk, they’re not easy. Be ready for impatient players. Whilst you may not notice it as a DPS, you will notice it as a tank. You will have to speed things up if that’s the case. Can’t go wrong with bear. Opt for charge and keep ahead of the group at all times, don’t let people run ahead of you. Utilize cat form for mobility.
