Advice on classic

So for all you vets out there.

As someone who arrived at BfA, currently Mythic Raiding (411ilvl)

What can you tell me as a fresh noon heading straight into classic? Like mistakes noobs make or things I need to know as general knowledge.

Cuz I bet my butt I ain’t ready

prepare to meet people and make friends. Also prepare to meet the biggest a holes ever. Things will be crazy. You will have a reputation on your server, so your actions matter.

ilvl doesnt matter

You have a reputation because you have to see the people on your server constantly. No randoms from other servers to be dicks too the whole time…

Tou’ll be fine. ALSO. Classic is nowhere close to what retail is. Do not come in with expectations of things to be as… fast… as they are in retail. Its much slower paced leveling wise.

Also.

Itemlevel.

it doesnt exist. everything is tuned really closely (cept naxx gear. lololol) and it is a battle of SKILL and how well you know your class and how fast you can interpret whats happening in the environment

  1. Train in First Aid.
  2. You don’t need to buy all your skills while leveling up. It’ll be harder to afford your mount at 40 if you do.
  3. Unless you’re using very specific builds on a couple of classes, you wont be able to pull more than 1-2 enemies at a time and survive.
  4. Seriously, train in First Aid.
  5. What stats are on the item are more important than item level
  6. Your class matters more than your spec. You wont be able to do put out DPS numbers on a Shaman that a Rogue can, even if you’re Elemental or Enhancement.
  7. There is no cross realm and getting a character to 60 is a lot harder than getting one to 120 in BfA. Your reputation matters.

Don’t go near dragon tails, you will almost always be flung into the air.

Wow, this sounds like the MMORPG I thought WoW was gonna be when I first arrived. I love a non-cross realm game.

You guys now just made me want classic to come out faster.

Is it really that important? :0

Yes.

First aid is REALLY that important/useful in classic.

Its a staple and if you said you dont have it everybody looks at you like you have a rear end for a nose.

I’ve tried to develop this as much as I could. Playing without add-ons makes you notice stuff on your own ;-;

Also, how is the PvP scene and what should I know about it?

When leveling in Vanilla WoW, you wont be able to infinitely chain pull enemies. You’ll run out of health and/or mana.

Having First Aid greatly reduces the down time by being the best way to restore health quickly in between fights without costing you any mana.

At 60, the amount of healing that bandages can do is nothing to scoff at.

Even if you’re a class that can heal, mana is a fairly precious resource. Especially at first since it’s actually increased by Intellect rather than balanced around always having the same amount like in BfA.

So the fact that a bandage doesn’t cost mana makes them useful to healers too.

Edit: I should add that in Vanilla WoW, First Aid and bandages are their own secondary profession like Cooking. They aren’t part of the Tailoring profession like in BfA.

Yeah I bought the game on BFA but I played trial during MoP or WoD? So I know how it used to be.

Well it sounds really useful, will the cloth to make it be hard to get?

Eh, a lot of people will still be using addons. Especially Quest-helping ones, dmg and threat meters, etc. PvP is an experience. More group oriented early on - till you start gettin some crazy geared raiders in there with their 1 shot builds and what not, mass-grinding for honor to make Rank 14.

My biggest piece of advice? Know your lane. As much as you’ll want to experiment and “have fun” - that doesn’t mean other players will accept that. Just because YOU may love being an ele shaman/enh shaman dps, doesn’t mean players will welcome you into their parties. And that’s okay. - its the game. Find players in your lane, dont expect the community to do it for you. You’ll have more fun that way.

Also don’t ninja-loot. You may want that Felstriker drop from UBRS, even though you joined as a healer, because you want to live that dagger/shield enhancement dream when grinding - but that fury war needs it more XD

even back then - first aid was almost useless

I used to watch YT videos about this back when I was 12yo? Like some years ago, it sounded pretty trollish XD but of course I wouldn’t do it. Sounds pretty stupid if you want to stick with good people.

What are the beast healers and DPS?

The cloth still drops from humanoids, so depending on where you’re questing it can be either plentiful or scarce.

Dungeons packed with humanoid mobs can often be a good source of it, like Stockades if you’re Alliance.

That unlike retail leveling is a part of the game. Last time I played retail leveling was like… maybe a brief tutorial. An obstacle so you could hit end game, then start the REAL game… reputations, dungeons, to heroics to raid etc etc.

In vanilla, leveling is a legit actual part of the game itself. So you are going to spend a LOT of time doing it comparatively. You have to see the value in it, because if you approach it like retail leveling its going to feel weird, and looooooooooong.

Basically if a class has a healing spec? They’re expected to heal in most PvE situations. Unless you make the party, then you can do whatever. All healing classes are capable in every aspect of PvE content. Their dps specializations? Not so much. Some exceptions to this would be Druid/Pally tanks; some of which can be quite decent for Dungeon content - but again, this is where developing your own internal community comes into play. Finding players that don’t mind what spec you’re running? Will alleviate all of this.

As for specifically answering your question - Fury wars (after some gearing and a content patch, Dire Maul i think, to bring in Lionheart helm and some other needed items), Mages, Rogues usually top meters in all content; but as far as dungeon content goes - pretty much everything is viable. Hybrids will have trouble getting in as dps, but this is where guilds/friends come into play.

The very basic rules for a noob in Classic WoWssssssss.

  1. Loot literally everything, EVERYTHING YOU CAN to vendor, this is a majority money maker until later levels.
  2. Do not obsess over main type professions at lower levels, you only need first aid. (Keep any patterns you find for the profession you play on using if they are good though)
  3. Make an effort to grind towards your quest. If your quest item to loot is in a cave, kill everything to and inside the cave. (Yes, this does make a difference in the end. Just don’t obsess over it)
  4. Do not buy every single skill, most skills you only need Rank 1 of anyways, unless you need that skill do not buy it.
  5. Dungeons can be a waste of time if certain quests do not reward valuable items. (You may dungeon as you please just a general speed runner thing)
  6. You do not have to wear the armor type you can use “suppose” to use. If you are a mail wearer and some leather gear pops up. If it is an upgrade use it by all means.
  7. Some quest items are just craftable items or standard world items, DO NOT accidentally vendor them. Make an effort to remember.
  8. The chicken quest - there is an escort quest that involves a robot chicken. Do not do this unless you have a group of friends readily available it is a waste of time.
  9. Learn how to spec into your build properly, if you wish to not do this by all means do so. However, It is easy to mess up and it becomes very costly, very fast to fix.
  10. Grinding mobs is very important, if you find a specific set of mobs in an area you like, grind there.
  11. Some quests are seriously a waste of time, if it requires a group and no one is readily there to help, skip it and come back to it later.
  12. All elites are dangerous, do not even bother with this madness unless you learn very quick on whatever class you are playing.
  13. I suggest taking skinning or herbalism if not both to level. You skin everything you kill to vendor or sell depending. Herbalism is nice in general and some flowers can be worth a fortune.
  14. Always double check the value of an item before selling it or vendoring it. Some items may not look much but are very valuable.
  15. Any pet you find that is not BoP is very valuable except the kittens and city pets vendor inventory. (Whelpings very very very good money)
  16. Plan your adventure according to what you have in your quest journal unless you frankly do not care. (If a quest needs to you leave the area you are going to, try to finish all the quests in that zone before moving on if reaonable)
  17. You should always ASK another player before grouping with them, it is rude to just randomly invite someone, if someone invites you randomly however when fighting a quest specific mob for a dropped item then it is ok and up to you at that point)
  18. Always grab the flightpath even if you think you will come back for it, just do it now.
  19. Know your role, if you are not a tank you never pull and you never cross out of your role unless it is required to survive.
  20. First aid is very important and at end game can be beyond valuable.
  21. If you play PvP remember if you do not help your faction mates you are a jerk.
  22. Do not steals loot chests. If you see someone killing mobs towards it, it belongs to them do not be a jerk. (If you are the one to loot a chest, take everything so it can respawn do not be that guy)
  23. Do not be afraid to do all level appropriate quests, move zones, then move back to the first zone. It was common.
  24. Weapon Skills are learned at level 10 in the capital cities and some cities are only able to teach specific ones, Polearms are level 20? IIRC)
  25. Have fun and enjoy your stay in Azeroth.
