Hey all, It has been a dream of mine to be able to play this game but for one reason or another i haven’t been able to…until now. Now I’ve been playing for a couple of days and still new to this world and need advice from senior and veteran players on whether I should immediately buy the newest expansion (while it’s on sale) or should i wait until i master the game’s mechanics or at least reach level 110? Thank you in advance for the help.
Here’s the thing: when Shadowlands the next expansion comes out, the BfA expansion will almost definitely be included into that as well free of charge. On the flipside, that likely won’t be for another 6+ months. Maybe 5, but that’s unlikely.
So I guess it’s a question of whether a) can you afford it, and b) if you’re tight on cash, how much will you be playing these 5-6 months?
If you’re going to be playing everyday for a few hours, then I’ll say go for it. If it’s for like once a week, I’d pass and wait.
If you have the money and want to play then I would buy BFA. It includes all of the previous expansions.
Personal opinion? Don’t waste your money on new expansions; they just aren’t living up to the hype anymore.
On a more objective front: wait to see how it pans out before buying. Maybe a few months at the least.
There’s a lot of cool stuff in BFA, but it’s basically irrelevant to you if you’re under 110.
You may not make it to 110 before Shadowlands launches. You may stop playing. You may end up rolling 7 alts. In any of these scenarios, you might as well wait until Shadowlands launches, because as others have stated, all previous expansions are usually included in the price of the current expansion.
Wait until lvl 105-ish. By that point you will know if you want to keep playing or not. If you do decide to keep playing, then you would have to look at when Shadowlands is coming out (if there is a release date by that point). When SL releases, BfA will become part of the base game, giving you access to all BfA content at no additional cost. However, if that point in time is still too far away for you, then it may be worth buying BfA right then.
It’s always nice to see new blood in the game, welcome!
As for when to buy expansions, it honestly depends on how you want to approach the game.
If you want to rush straight into the endgame grind and don’t want to touch levelling, just buy the Complete Collection (it’s on sale!) that includes BfA and a Shadowlands pre-order which includes a 120 and 110 character boosts.
If you want to take it slow and familiarize yourself with the game as a whole, just play how you want until you get a class you like to 110 (the level cap for those who don’t own BfA) and then make a decision from their if you want to purchase BfA and move into that content.
I would personally suggest not to rush it, take the slow road and experience the game in all facets. Your only a new player once, relish it!
I’d play through as much as you can before buying the xpac just to make sure you like it. The game’s mechanics are not all that difficult in comparison to newer MMOs. Not to diss the game though, because it is fun. I hope you enjoy
Wow thank you all for the advice, i think i’ll wait until shadowlands then. One of the things that made me want to buy bfa is the demon hunter class, i think it’s cool haha but i’ll wait until shadowlands and maybe then i’ll buy it. Me waiting for shadowlands also give me an opportunity to save more money i guess so there’s no harm in that.
To Zane, Stompypotato, Vanforth, Shonky, Epheria, Windizu, and Ogodbeez, thank you for the replies, i appreciate it a lot.
I’m confused. I thought all you need is BFA now?
BFA becomes base game when Shadowlands releases, so unless you want to do BFA content right now, you can wait it out and just get Shadowlands when it becomes official.
Doesn’t the trial cap out at level 20?
If you don’t pay for a subscription, add a sub and it goes up to lvl 110.
Wow! That’s pretty cool.
Yeah, OP. In that case I’d just play till 110.
I was gonna be the dissenting voice and say get BFA, but maybe hold off until you have a 110 character. The game till 110 is pretty awesome, if a more solo experience.
I keep seeing comments mentioning that “It’s fine if you don’t play the new xpac right away”, because outside of leveling dungeons, group content will be fairly deserted, save for a select few mog runs or whatever.
Wouldn’t you be missing out on the fun of the game by not playing current content?
The thing is he won’t be playing current content for a little while, anyway.
I don’t think he should wait till SL like the other posters said. But on learning what Jerauld says about being able to level to 110 with just a sub, I’d say he’s safe to wait to get BFA till then.
Also, OP, if BFA is one sale, buy it now IMO. Blizz doesn’t put their actual games on sale very often (just around Thanksgiving I think).
If indeed your rogue is your only character, you’ll probably have “mastered” the game mechanics buy level 40ish (there seriously is not much to know).
Yeah this is one the things that made me doubt buying bfa now, even if i do get the newest content, i wont be playing them for a while. But the sale is really tempting. But lately i’ve been playing classic so i’m really torn here hahaa but thank you everyone for the advice i really do appreciate it! it certainly made me feel welcomed in the community
