I recently rejoined WoW. I haven’t played for ten years and I made a new account. I purchased BFA and upgraded a mage to 110 which is now 112 (Arcane) and I leveled up a Vengeance Demon Hunter to 102 so far. I’ve enjoyed playing those but I just made this Mistweaver Gnome Monk. I don’t have too much free time besides breaks from school, so I want to try out this healing spec.
I’m really noobish in Battlegrounds although I can hold my own in dungeons as a DPS or Tank.
Does anyone have any general advice? I can’t really afford heirloom objects. Should I just skip out of BGs?
I really am enjoying WoW but I’m in a server with a lot of experienced players. I can up my game, just might take some time and I won’t be able to get the best gear for quite some time.
Thank you in advance.

unless you enjoy being pummeled on repeat in BGs moreso than usual as you cross your fingers and pray for your group being able to carry to a win you should probably avoid them.
if you get lucky you might find some nice players on your realm set who will help you buy heirloom pieces, or maybe use your higher level toons to grab some pet drops from old raids and sell them to eventually build up the gold to buy a set of heirlooms. should probably stick to pve until you get some. depending on your server it may or may not be safe to level in warmode in the low brackets too so it’s worth trying that out to speed your leveling up a good bit to make up for lost time.

Fight with your team. Only engage the enemy if you have people around you who will support you. Even if you die, your team might finish off the enemy. If you’re alone, your death won’t accomplish much, so don’t be aggressive unless you know you can win.
If you’re new to a battleground, just stick with the largest group of people on the map. Strength in numbers and all that.

Google Para and watch some of his videos…he does well in Pug BG’s…look at how he sets up his talents and his rotations…but really really focus on where he keeps his toon at in the BG.
Watch how he uses terrain to caste and hide. See where he stands and how he moves with the flow.

Thank you all very much for the advice!
Yeah. I would advise not going into bg’s for now, as most will have heirlooms. Dungeons are probably your best bet. Don’t forget to turn on WM for that 30% buff if you only dungeon tho

Without heirlooms, you should still be okay in BG’s on your demon hunter, honestly (and in both specs). I would still queue for BG’s if you enjoy them, and you can queue for other activities at the same time so that way you’re not chain running the same content.
Really, just focus on getting back into the swing of things. Take your time and really learn the in’s and out’s of your classes! No sense in rushing to the end just to jump on the catch-up treadmill.
You might also want to consider joining a server for new players. I know when I visited Dalaran I was able to get into a guild that was focused on teaching. Maybe you’ll get lucky and find the same!

I’m sorry for not specifying, but I meant my Monk when I referred to being underpowered due to the lack of heirlooms. My mage has pretty decent gear from the BFA content I’ve done so far and my Demon Hunter is pretty good on gear too. I still suck at BGs in strategy but I do a lot of DPS with my mage and DH can hold up.
I’m worried that catching up from 1-110 will be hard in BGs without heirloom gear that other players have.
I’ll be good though eventually.
I really appreciate all of the help!
Heirlooms don’t really matter that much since their stats were nerfed with the stat squish and leveling overhaul. They’re really only used for their experience boost which deactivates once you hit 110, so you’ll be on an even playing field once you start doing BFA content. As an Alliance player, you have access to the warmode experience boost while questing, so those last few levels should go by quickly.

I see. Thanks for pointing that out.
I currently have about 2,400 gold between my toons. Would you recommend me buying a piece or two and shipping them to my Monk for that exp bonus?

Probably not worth the gold cost. Not only do you have the price of the heirloom, but you also have to consider the cost of the upgrade tokens or else the experience boost will deactivate once you outlevel them. It will probably be better to save that gold for expenses when you reach max level.
If you haven’t yet chosen your professions, I suggest giving one of your characters Herbalism and Mining. Build up that gold for enchants/gems or maybe even a repair mount.

With the new lvling exp change making it faster to lvl heirlooms aren’t as needed for new players just something to collect and work towards

Got it!
Yes I’ve taken up Herbalism on my Mage and Cooking on my Monk so far.
I really appreciate the advice.
In terms of dungeons, you don’t need heirlooms to tank or heal. Heirlooms are honestly only max useful in pvp or dpsing to top meters. You will be able to do your job just fine without them (except in pvp). Focus on lvling whichever toon you felt the most fun with. Your lvl 100+ toons are in the same boat as everyone else lvling and you will be able to catch up in a reasonable amount of time.
Your lvl 11 monk will do ok as well in terms of lvling.

Remember, you can have two professions at once on one character, so try to get 2 gathering professions on a character if you can. Mining/Herbalism is a good combination since the materials are always in demand and collecting them gives experience. Skinning is fine if you don’t want to go around hunting for ores or herbs since you can just skin the beasts you kill.
Cooking and fishing don’t count as primary professions, so you can take them even if you already have professions. Don’t bother leveling them on more than one character since you can just mail yourself food from your own characters, and leveling cooking can get expensive.
