Advice for buying RAM Memory

I am looking to buy some ram memory for my computer but I’m just curious about what to expect and if I should even bother.

I am not using a super gaming computer nor am I looking to buy one. I have a mini tower that I can use just fine and played pretty well with in Legion, in fact it was one of the best playing experiences I’ve had. But I get some lag in areas, lag at the start of raids fights and Warfronts, phasing into other zones for large group world bosses, and some lag in cities but mostly in Boralas and Dazar alor. In low population areas I can max around 30 fps.

So I’m wondering if an increase in my RAM Memory would help to lessen some of these issues. My computer has 4gb of ram using 1 of the 2 slots. However when I start up the computer with all of the stuff running in the background I’m down to 1.7 gbs left. Add to that the game and the wow launcher in the background and I’m down to just under 300mgb. If I turn some stuff off like the adobe cloud app and turn off the launcher I can play the the game with around 650mgbs available.

So if I add another 4 gbs to the system will it help with some of the issues I’m having? I remember one tech supporter told me that ram actually can have a positive affect on the fps. I’m just wondering what kind of improvement can I get or is it just not worth it to spend the money because the processor isn’t fast enough? In legion my recommended graphic settings where at 5 and now in BfA it’s 3, if that helps any. I’d appreciate any advice.

RAM can help, particularly if you are using integrated graphics, which pulls it’s memory from system RAM.

My advice would be to head to a website like
www.crucial.com and use their system to assess what you should get. I’d probably only upgrade to 8gb of RAM. That should be a significant upgrade.

The other upgrade may be to add a video card, but that’s a conversation for another day. RAM is probably going to be cheaper.

The mini-tower uses laptop ram. What you have installed is DDR 3 SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600 (also known as PC3L 12800). You best bet would be to buy a matching kit of 2 x 4GB sticks of Ram. Less chance of issues and that Ram price is low currently.

It’s worth noting that you’re you’re trying to buy faster ram you’re better off buying a 2 stick kit at larger DIMM sizes (within what your motherboard supports) than adding more or using a 4 stick kit. This is because of how memory topology works on motherboard. They always favor two stick configurations for the fastest speeds.

Be careful with this, memory controllers will struggle to reach maximum potential speeds with four sticks for a dual channel configuration.

My suggestion would be a 2x8GB kit at the fastest your motherboard supports.

You could buy one stick and simply install it alongside the other stick you have. Usually there will be no issue. To avoid any possibility of issue it is best to buy a matching kit of 2 sticks of ram. That laptop ram is surprisingly cheap right now. They are selling 2 stick kits of Corsair Vengeance gaming ram for $50 on that webpage.

The motherboard doesn’t support a stand alone graphics card. Was worth a look though

It’s hard to say Kaileena. As Zungar pointed out your system has onboard graphics so it is a good candidate for more ram. I’m sure you will see some improvement. Let us know. (2 x 4GB will be 8GB total)

For onboard graphics I’d suggest closer to 8 or 16… favoring the 16, that can be pricey though. 4gb seems to trigger a bit of an odd behavior in my observation with 64bit systems where they page more than they should. 8Gb is good in practice for most people, but giving the graphics a bit extra is usually worth it.

First let’s get windows right up to date. Type Update in windows search box. Click Check for updates . That will open your updates page. It may say “You’re up to date”. Disregard that untruth and click the Check for Updates box below.

Be warned that should start a big update. The October Windows update. Will take some time. Afterwards continue clicking that Update box until you have no updates.

I see some Windows/Wow errors. Let’s run the games repair tool after you get all up to date.

*First run the Battle.net Launcher in Administrator mode - close Launcher. Restart computer to stop all Blizzard processes. Right click the desktop icon - select “Run as Administrator” - Then run the Tool.

Tool is found on the Battle.net Launcher. Look for “Options” - directly below the Wow-BfA emblem. The tool is there. Takes around 10 minutes to run.

Ok so update. I did update to the October windows version, but I have don’t the rest of the recommendations yet. I picked up a 4gb stick of ram about an hour ago. The computer won’t take anything higher, but the difference is significant. I logged onto Boralas with around 15 fps which is normal but with no lag. NONE!

I went and did a invasion in Voldun and turned the graphics to 4 and had around 20 fps with no lag and I was able to zone into a world raid and zoned immediately with no lag, that never happens. I’m now back in Boralas with the grahpics at 4 with 13 but still no lag. This is great. Thanks for all the advice.
