So, I just returned to the game this week after not playing since TBCCs release (other than to knock out some mage tower challenges in December), and I don’t really have too many complaints. The catch up mechanics were pretty decent, the story wasn’t too terrible (the quests, especially 9.1s, were pretty boring however), but there is one thing that’s really soured it all: Adventures in Zereth Mortis.
The achievement required to unlock flying for which you need to kill 10 rare spawns. That doesn’t seem like it would be too difficult. However, when the zone is crowded with dozens of servers worth of people flying around picking rares off like vultures - it really makes it nearly impossible to get tags on these rares while on a ground mount.
I feel like this was a pretty massive oversight. You can literally turn dungeon and pvp gear into tier sets but they still want you doing mundane things for flying. 2 other achievements just have you run around the zone clicking on items on the ground - so what’s the point? /shrug
There are a few that are close together and make it a bit easier.
From Pilgrim’s Grace flight point there is the wasp rare right there with the bees and it spawns often. Then just across the road is the cartel guy when he is up. The Dunes have the bird boss, the sand worm, the three rares in the center, and general zarathura on the other side. Then Mother phestis and Otaris are close by on the road.
That is 10 and they are only a short distance from each other.
You can camp the spawn spot and use the group finder as well. That should get you the rares in pretty short order.
Use the Silver Shardhide Whistle that you can get from Korthia. It can get you 1/4 of the way around the circle seriously fast.
Ask if anyone is willing to lend a hand with a 2-person mount. I’ve seen this happen on a few servers where people have been nice.
Get a rare addon to help give you an idea of when some of them will be back up. Some are always going to be back up, some are on a different schedule depending on the day.
Get Handy Notes and the supplemental Handy Notes Shadowlands to help out with knowing where they are and any other tidbits of info you need on summoning them, etc.
Ask around about other ways to get super speed buffs. I think there’s one from the Jiro and there might still be rocket boots.
I dislike the pathfinder design but they really hate flying. But if you’re having trouble getting the rares, just ask someone with a taxi mount to group up with you. Carry your weight and don’t slow them down and there would be no issues.
Thanks for the suggestions and tips, guys. I was actually lucky enough to get the 10th one I needed a few minutes ago. I’m sure a lot of people haven’t been as lucky, though. It was just a weird requirement that kinda stuck out as a big “why?” moment.
Now I get to grind my way to Revered 11 rep at a time! Yay!
I personally don’t see the point of denying flying for that short period of time. I suspect it was a compromise between the devs who wanted flying from day one and those who wanted a much longer wait.
It was one of those, “we want you to be on the ground to experience the game, because we don’t know how to make vertical content that’s engaging” things.
Yeah, I don’t disagree. I was thinking about overall, but I think they did that as a way to herd people through ZM.
I kind of think they needed a way to show people there was more to ZM than what they saw. Getting flight involves fully exploring the zone, in a lot of places that could’ve been completely ignored. Maybe they weren’t confident in what they built like they were with Timeless Isle.
Probably the best option. I pretty much did this right from when ZM first opened and there was no flying.
Another option, which actually can work sometimes, is to ask in chat if anyone farming rares will fly you around with them on their 2-seater so you can get flying. There’s actually nice people out there. They’re not always on or around, but you might get lucky.
I actually quite like ZM and think that flying actually enhances the experience. Aerial threats were handled reasonably well. If you aren’t careful you can get in trouble, but there’s strategies for dealing with them, and if the phone rings or you get kid aggro there’s always a safe altitude you can climb to.
You only need to kill 5 though? 10 is just the second tier. I got confused on this as well don’t worry. I had 6 killed when I thought my last ones I needed was adventures and tales of the exile. When I finished tales of the exile I got flying. Still only had 6 rares killed.
Nope, I wish I didn’t get more achievements today or I would show you a screenshot. I got flying the moment I picked up the final scroll. Then I got adventures for 10 after I got flying. Trust me I was shocked. I was on my druid in travel form (cheetah) and picked up the scroll and turned into a bird.
