TL;DR- Retail scaling in old content that provides a ‘normal’ difficulty to old content with the benefit of increased cosmetic / rep progression.
I suppose Remix might be a sort of thing for this, but I am new to the game so I haven’t had the chance to experience that event yet.
The reasons why I thought of this: I am out doing old content, beautiful zones with some fun lore events and I’m absolutely massacring everything no matter the level / difficulty ranking. I am totally fine with it all being solo-able, because that’s what I’d like to do, but I had an consistent brain itch on what if it was just a bit more engaging and a bit less “I am the world destroyer” (but with benefits). As I recalled during some time walking events (while not perfect) it was kind of cool to see the old content but not 1 shot. (I don’t want classic experience, I do want to make progress on retail)
So I thought Adventure Mode might be cool (where things are not 1 shot, but they also reward more for it):
- All monsters without any currency / cosmetic to unlock are half heartily scaled to you (so like trash monster if you were a geared player in a current expansion)
- All monsters that have a progression associated to it (rep, currency, cosmetics you HAVEN’T unlocked) now scale to you in a more meaningful way, such that their auto attacks deal minimal damage, their abilities cause some damage, and avoidable abilities cause note-able damage (if you were trying to capture normal mode vibes). This scaling is a little bit more loose in dungeon / raid such that solo’ing it is still achievable, just wont be 1 slap tapy (so you can still go mythic raid solo, but instead of 1 second boss fights it might be a minute plus)
- As a benefit to the slower progress: All rep, currency, and cosmetic drop chances increase substantially, with potentially an extra roll on “unobtained” cosmetics (so the boss drops a bunch of loot, and then rolls for a chance for something you definitely don’t have*).
'* A toy that I thought might be neat is one where you cast it on an enemy and it stores their name, each time you fail to get a new usable unlock item (minion, armor, mount, etc) from them you have a greater chance next time (stacking until something new drops, if something new is possible). Perhaps with a secondary effect if you have the meta-achievement for that expansion (so it grows faster).
I was sometimes watching bosses for fun while they did 0 damage just to see what they did, but felt funny too because I wanted to dodge by also knew there was no reason for it. I also then thought about how it would probably be boring to farm an old content, again, and again and again, via one shot methods and imagined it would be a lot more fun if it was a bit more engaging with reward offsets.
Additionally:
- Some quests are broken due to being overpowered, potentially this could help fix that… a few times I had to get naked just so a quest wouldn’t break
- May consider other concepts in conjunction to add additional vibes:
-
- Flight paths are twice as fast,
-
- Move speed buff (ground mounts are even faster)
-
-
- Vigor recharges very fast on the ground but you only have one or two charges that don’t recharge in the air (for vanilla flight you just have X flight time before you glide back to the ground). This way you are not hobbled from content that expects it (like a chest on a small rock spire), you’re not slow on the ground, but you are also encouraged to view the world from the angle intended for that expansion.
-
For turning it on and off, as I assume many might just think “why not turn it on for a dungeon, raid, X rep farm, and then turn it off” I guess on one hand it doesn’t fully matter, but if they wanted to capture the vibe upon entering the zone might just give it a toggle like War Mode or by talking to Chromie (if you wanted to lore it in).
Is it needed…? Definitely no!
However, I Just keep thinking to myself rather than eviscerating a content it might be a bit more fun to have it slightly challenging and more rewarding due to that. I still want to be able to solo it , just want to see a bit more of the fights and not think “I am wasting potential growth time” by going slow. Yes it’s trying to trick my own brain lol, but so are many other mechanics, like fancy music when you open a chest…
If some of this stuff is in Remix, looking forward to it then, but as far as I know there is only MoP Remix- so… if that’s what I’m looking for in the above ideas, please also make the other ‘Retail+’ experiences and put them on a schedule so I know I’m not missing out lol. (I greatly dislike one offs, but cyclical schedules are fine).
