I just worked my way up to advanced phial experimentation and it has made no difference. I have tried 3 times on this recipe with the following results:
1st attempt: Explosion
2nd attempt: Successful but no new recipe
3rd attempt: Explosion
The last few regular experimentations all exploded on me. I am beyond frustrated with this profession. Blizz, this has to change. The lockout mechanic is not fun. Wasting resources on a RNG chance to learn something new is not fun. I know that these sorts of things happen in real life, but I get enough of this difficulty in real life.
End the backfire mechanic. It adds nothing but an over-long cooldown that just frustrates us.
Yeah, Alchemy sucks. Might as well make a double gatherer. I went with Potion Experimentation, though it’s not maxed out, yet. Skill and experiments to raise them are absolutely the barrier, and it sucks.
I feel punished for being an Alchemist. To even make any real money doing my own farming I’d have to have a reasonable influx of Awakened Order–something that isn’t possible by design.
You aren’t really wasting resources. you get potions and phials. You can use healing potions which uses one of the easiest to buy/farm resources.
You should really try some of the other professions. I don’t think you Alchemists really understand how good you have it compared to other professions.

I don’t get into “I have it worse” arguments. You either lose or your life is harder. I know that other professions require work orders to max out and that it becomes a Lord of the Flies competition to level them. That sucks too.
And I know that I can make plenty of resources to experiment. The problem is that on Wednesday I made enough for 3 experiments. It is now late Saturday I still have not used those resources because of the time lock.
That’s how many experiments have been blowing up in my face. So yes, you are frustrated with your profession. My frustration with mine does not diminish that. We can both be equally frustrated.
My point is you get skill ups for practically nothing and end up ahead because you get potions when you experiment. So you use cheap resources and get potions that require lots of resources.
For instance I have gotten 5 Elemental potions of Power and a bunch Phials. Those would have cost me an arm and a leg to buy off the AH right now. I am easily ending up ahead while using experimentation. So I’m essentially getting paid to level up Alchemy.
And my issue is that I am getting NONE of that. Since Wednesday I have been lock out of experimenting so much and blown up so many times that I have not had even 3 experiments with no backfire.
That’s just not fun.
Advanced Exp has about 80% chance to succeed, you can’t be that unlucky that you always land on the 20% fail for 3 days in a row… eventually, the odds will even out.
I just had another explosion on advanced experiment. So I am that unlucky.
As long as it was coded correctly.
