What would happen if for whatever reason Wow Players did not have access to third-party Guides? Yes I know the Devs have put quest arrows and other manner of direction in the game itself.
But What would happen if players could not go to 3rd party websites and youtube etc. to get information on how to play their class and completing quests. People have become so use to these help sites, that perhaps they’ve become too dependent on them.
And No Addons whatsoever.
Do you think players would be able to survive without the extra help? Face the challenge and march on? Or do you think players would just abandon the game?
This is the best Reply so far. So I am placing it here:
This Reply is an interesting take on the situation:
Players have been using “third party assistance” since WoW was released. Before Wowhead, it was Thottbot. Same thing basically, database of items and comments from players helping other players.
YouTube just makes it easier since players can see versus read what they should be doing.
This game has never existed in a state where players were completely on their own to discover and learn how to deal with an encounter.
With the exception of maybe the first 6? Months of the games release back in 2004, there has never been a time where there hasn’t been online resources to access to help you play wow.
Is it much more now than it was back then? Sure. But is there a lot more content in the game than there was back then? Yep. Is the game a lot more clever and complex now than it was back then? Yep. So of course cominsuratelty there is going to be more detailed and extensive online resources to help.
That is how we played an infinitely more difficult to understand game called World of Warcraft, as opposed to what this game using its name now is.
Today, you probably would just die once or twice and get it.
My guess? Nothing. Not in the immediate term. Longer term, blizz would probably have to stop putting in easter eggs and other secrets since no one would find them or at least a lot less would. Also pve content would have to get dumbed down to Wotlk level mechanics since participation would probably drop. Not as bad as if they banned DBM or WA mind you, but it would definitely reduce player participation.
I’m starting to get the feeling you don’t think players can figure things out for themselves. You should’ve just led with that.
Basically, this scenario you’re imagining is a single-player game, offline like the old days, where you had to figure things out yourself or be stuck / give up.
Well, I really don’t know what players might do. I remember in 2004 people figured things out pretty much by themselves. Or by talking to each other in-game and questing together.
These days people have become very dependent on the website guides. And addons.
That’s why I posed the question.
What I remember as a help guide was a large book: World of Warcraft: Official Strategy Guide. But that was it. the Book was published in November 2004. But that was it. The book was just the basics of how to play.
Judging from how some people complain about how some of the quests are too hard to understand even with 3rd party guides and that they can’t figure out rotations. I would bet. Some players would run into the woods screaming. Lol.
Well this isn’t 2004 anymore, and quite frankly, i don’t want to go back to that time. Not just for WoW but for … any game really. Not to burst anybody’s nostalgia but… i really don’t think anybody wants to buy a book/magazine just to know how to beat a game. Or even further then that when the internet isn’t even a thing. Not slow, just non existent.
So a game comes out, and there’s already like 100 guides. May i ask what’s the problem with that you can’t simply ignore them? You can ask people for help, or etc. Or still figure things out yourself.
The last part, is basically what i would do personally.
Oh, just a hypothetical question. Similar to this example:
What do you think would happen if cell phones stopped working world wide. What do you think peoples reaction would be. How do you think people would react. This won’t happen.
But If It Did. What is your opinion on how people would deal with it?
