Addons, Streamers

Quite a few of us use or used addons for Classic WoW. Some used only a few like me, Mapcoords, Immersion, Shot Timer. Some used a lot including Questie. I’m not judging here.

I could do a giant post explaining exactly how addons and programs that support them like Twitch and Minion mean that you will end up with adware pop ups on your desktop that are nearly impossible to get rid of, but do you really want to read all that?

The culprit once again is Streamers, who get some of their income through adware. There are ways to combat it if you still want to keep your addons updated seamlessly, but those have security risks of their own.

Does playing Classic WoW mean a large percentage of the player base will have to accept popups on their desktops without extensive measures with security risks of their own?

Is this acceptable?

Edit: Many of the replies you will read below are based upon people who believe I am dumping on Streamers. I am not. One guy attacked grandkids I don’t even have. Others say I am illiterate. It’s amusing really. However, there is a connection between Twitch, Addons for Classic WoW, Streamers, and Advertising. If Twitch does it, other programs that support addons may as well. Streamers mean more advertising, advertising that sometimes finds its way unto people’s desktops (a well known and documented problem).

However, this is a well documented problem. I haven’t used Twitch for anything for well over 10 years. I forget exactly by now but I remember Curse had its problems back then as well which is why I avoided it like the plague. Turns out it’s the same old dump, just more evolved, and twice as likely to irritate someone.

Ad ware is a serious problem, which can lead to much nastier programs so it is best to eliminate it asap even if it does not slow down a computer. My real question was on adware. Adware is unacceptable to me when it is in relation to my gameplay of Classic WoW. Is Adware acceptable to you? Not just with Classic WoW. Do you think Adware is acceptable?

In the meantime, I guess I have to inform grandkids (I don’t have) they have a busy weekend doing something. Offensive much?

If you do not have an adware problem, let alone a pop up on your desktop, why are you griefing?

I was certainly unaware of just how “greasy” Twitch and associated programs have become. I just wanted to inform others in the same boat.

Finally, I can add many more links addressing the same problem but do you really want to read all that? Did you really want to read all this?

Have been using addons for years with 0 issues. Its probably other sites you’re visiting…

Nope. Last two years, after Legion, I literally only used the internet to Amazon, check email, and maybe Espn on occasion. Installed Classic WoW and that all changed fast.

I actually read up a lot on it so I do know what I am talking about.

To be honest, I use addons, and have zero popups. You have a virus or something. It’s not just from the addons.

Ive never had a pop up. You should probably get a good Malware or Antivirus program.

How many people live in your house? I have a long history of fixing computers in my previous career. I can’t tell you how many times people brought me a computer loaded with viruses and adware from surfing spicy sites that claimed they only use it for email, or some other inocuous purpose. “I don’t surf those kinds of sites, and my husband and 16 year old son would never do that either”. Come on…

If you aren’t surfing the spicy sites on your computer, someone who lives in your house is.

Nope. Reset entire PC. All I did was install programs for keyboard, mouse, Arctis Pro, and Classic WoW and a few addons…and the popups immediately came right back. After doing the Adware Clean, it was back the next day upon bootup.

Maybe YOU should type in the words “adware” and “twitch” into your search engine and see what you find out. My only option was to completely uninstall it all, do an sfcscannow and winsoc reset.

It is not acceptable to me.

I am asking if it would be acceptable to you?

Are you talking about the twitch program giving you viruses/malware/ect, or the addons themselves?

Of course no one wants adds or popups.

But this really sounds like a you problem.

Been using twitch app and other sites for add-ons for years and have literally never had this problem ever.

gonna die laughing if he’s talking about twitch and how it can give you action center notifications … just change the notifications area of windows 10 (what i’m assuming you’re on) to not display twitch/blizzard/etc/whatever

Like most others, I’ve had 0 pop ups. You probably shouldn’t download third party programs just for mods and addons. I’ve watched twitch via the site, you don’t need an app or program.

Just download and drag it into the interface folder. This will always work. Curse, twitch etc is for suckers.

All I know is that my computer is unaffected now.

I live alone, no woman no cry, no kids, my own mortgae. Downside means I have to do it all. Upside is there is no one to stab me in the back.

All I know is that like many things in life, I am not the only one affected. You could say it is a ME problem, but that’s lazy. Did you read all the things I’ve done to combat this? The only thing I didn’t do is install ADLOC, which has security risks of it’s own but claims to block all Twitch adware specifically.

And also as I type this one post I have received 15 popups asking if I will let us.forums.blizzard.com show notifications.

You guys are missing the point. I am asking that if it were you, and you did every reasonable thing to have a stable gaming experience…

would this be acceptable to you?

Well, if it’s a program that installs/updates addons, I can not speak. I manually install addons. And addons themselves have given me 100% absolutely no problems.

Have you tried to hard close Twitch app? Just Xing out doesnt close the App. I usually right click on it and close app. I dont like intrusive programs running in the backround. Same thing goes for discord.

you’re leaving out information. for a freshly reset/reinstalled computer to have an issue - it’s gotta be the user, not twitch or streamers … so keep blaming everyone but yourself - see how long it takes for you to solve your issues.

Are you trolling? You’ve never seen another site ask for permission to show notifications? This has 0 to do with addons, twitch, or streamers.

What popups are you even getting? I don’t think you ever specified. Are they web browser popups for ads? Or are they actually twitch windows?

Other people don’t have this problem, so there is obviously something different about your PC.

No you missed the whole post, that the problem came back the next morning after I did a fresh reset, installed minimal programs, wow and a few addons…that’s all. The problem isn’t me, but it’s nice that you think so.

Read up instead of blaming me. It is true that Twitch and Streamers are associated with adware popups on desktops and that there are programs to specifically address this.

Seriously the only way I got rid of it was to uninstall everything but programs for keyboard, mouse, and headphones, sfc scannow and winsoc reset.

Your grandkid is going to have a long weekend ahead of him.

what kind of popups are you getting? you should probably run a malware scan, addons should absolutely NOT be giving you popups on your desktop.
