Addons + Microsoft

Curious if the addon changes are actually being driven by Microsoft in terms of protecting their newly acquired IP. Can’t have non-affiliated developers putting their own creations and features into the game. Thoughts?

100%. They didn’t purchase Blizzard to not make long term plans to keep WoW as a cash cow.

All these changes are just building towards longevity and in part bringing the game to console, eventually. Doubt it will happen in the Worldsoul Saga but it’s definitely coming.

I hadn’t thought of this, but considering the potential security risks with them, maybe.

however, I feel that would be across the board. It seems here it’s mostly about addons that add a certain level of combat utility.

I think, it may be something else, but that this theory could lend to the decision. you know straw camel back.

I don’t really follow the logic here. No addons I can think of with any serious adoption do anything that threaten WoW’s product identity. Starfield was a recent Bethesda high-profile release, under the Microsoft banner, which still had official mod support.

Oblivion Remastered doesn’t, but there could be a lot of reasons for that.

I don’t think it matters whether it’s seriously adopted or not. Any addons that are deemed problematic for one reason or another is something they don’t want in their game even if only a handful of players use it. I am assuming the Starfield mods are approved or developed in tandem with company devs, and or the creator tools in the game allow Microsoft to closely limit what can and cannot be done.

They’re not nuking addons as a whole, it’s combat addons that are being banned. WeakAuras is shutting down as a side effect. You will, however, be able to use as many other purely cosmetic addons as your heart desires in Midnight.

Yeah I think starting with combat addons is the most palatable to the current player base. This change can be implemented and then rolled out further over time to the rest of them.

Blizz have been saying for years that they didn’t like the combat addon situation and wanted to change it. Now they got to the point when they are ready to do it.

That’s possible, but there’s no reason to ban addons in the PC version to accomodate consoles since there’s no advantage asymmetry to be gained from non-combat addons. They don’t care about anything that doesn’t impact encounters.

My thoughts are: everyone is somewhere between over reacting and rage baiting. Hyperbole is everywhere.

I’m just thinking about the mods people make for Bethesda games and imagining what it would be like to be the dev tasked with working closely with the fan creator responsible for the popular animated genital physics addon.

I never figured I’d see people inventing a bunch of wild conspiracy theories to explain why combat addons are being disabled.

The answer is pretty well documented.

Can’t have 20-40 buttons on a controller, can you?

Can’t have wide open addons on a console, can you?

World of Warcraft would probably help a failing game pass, wouldn’t it?

Seems awfully obvious why this is happening. It’s for the best if you wanted this game to survive another 15 years.

Ah ok, yeah I mean I’m right there with you I understand the logic as applied to the competitive aspects of the game. I’m cool with it as long as the replacements are as helpful. But without total rp, gold counter, bar tender it would be a rough transition for me. Perhaps it’s just what I am used to though…

It’s less the number of binds and more the extremely fast GCD that’s a problem for controller play – controllers can simulate a lot of keybinds (people already play WoW on the Steam Deck) but it’s awkward to do several of those combinations every 1 to 1.5 seconds.

So no, I doubt these changes are primarily made with that in mind.

Well I don’t consider it wild I think it could be a reasonable ask from legal. Was just curious to see what other people thought. For such an old game it’s prob not worth the dev costs of actually creating these things for IP protection, QA or wtv else is in the calculus. So the documented answer is likely the correct one.

I just hope this means they put resources into the game to keep it alive and healthy.

Cash cows don’t exist freely on their own, they require maintenance to keep that status.

If this were true, I question why Bethesda’s games are still some of the most widely-modded and moddable games out there. Y’know, since Microsoft has owned them for a hot minute now.
