Addons in Classic

Is it safe to assume that the preferences set for each addon in retail would carry over to classic? Meaning if i have a custom UI addon set up in retail just how I like it, would there be a preferences file that i could copy/paste into the classic directory that would keep my set up the same?

I understand the exact same addon folder wouldn’t be compatible, but I’m curious if a preference file somewhere within would be?

It will depend on the addon

Something like ElvUI or WA then most likely yes.

Thanks, worth a shot then I guess. My plan was to set up some addons now that I think will likely be available for classic, and then copy those preferences over once classic arrives. That way I could set up all of my stuff beforehand. UI addons tend to take some time to get just how you like them.

That is a perfect idea. I would think nearly 90% of the addons, provided someone makes a classic version, should work with the same profile settings if exported or even copying the wtf files.

The setting are entirely separate, classic and retail use separate folders for addons and interfaces(since they have complete separate install directories), You will not be able to just copy your add on folder over( trhe add ons won’t be compatible) and likely trying to copy your WTF folder will not work either.

No, but not because of Blizzard specifically.

Each Addon Author will have to tell you whether there are differences in their configuration from Retail to Classic. Things like focus frame have been removed, things like weapon skill have been added, and things like cast bars have been changed.

Whether or not the UI configuration for one addon works in Retail and Classic is largely up to the author’s differences in the configuration since it’s literally simply saving the LUA variable that they direct.

I would have considered these the least likely to transfer directly over, simply because of the large number of changes that have been made to cater for Classic.

Well yes and no? Location and basic functionality and assets should be ok. Of course, things like buff and debuff indicators or triggers will need to be created from scratch for WA. So while not perfect I suspect a lot of basic layouts should still work.

And that is a big assumption on my part.

Like others have said it will be dependent on the addon itself.

The files you are looking to copy over would be
World of Warcraft > retail > WTF > Account > {AccountName} > SavedVariables
as well as possibly
… {AccountName} > {realm} > {character} > SavedVariables

But it comes over to how the addon saves its info and how compatible it is with the classic version.

Maybe? I don’t think so because the classic addons will have modifications made to them so they work with Classic so I wouldn’t think the settings would be interchangable because they’re technically ‘different’ or at least different versions. It’s worth seeing though /shrug.

Again, another yes or no. The classic addons are built upon the current live API. They do need to be made to work within the current classic version which does add some limitations to them.

Usually, the items that an addon author save in profile settings files should be interchangeable… EXCEPT for the said abilities, ranks and what not mentioned above

But you are correct in that we are all shrugging. Testing each addon will need to be done.

Great, another tourist

10/10, care to explain?
