Addon to notify when and who buffs me

You know when someone randomly buffs you in the world? When that happens, I don’t even notice most of the time, and when I do notice I feel half guilty for not noticing so I could /ty them.

I’d love an addon to notify me when and who someone buffs me. Does anything like this exist, if anyone knows?

I’m sure there are but please no.

There’s nothing less sincere than automated grats and thanks.

Obviously this is something I care about or I wouldn’t have made the thread. I’d say that qualifies as sincere.

Automated thanks aren’t necessary. If I could have an addon that just notifies me who and when someone buffs me, that would be perfect.

Would you not support that?

There aren’t enough letters in the word, “no” to express the no-ness of this.

Phodge?

For what possible reason would you be against something that inconveniences no one and which the one and only purpose is to make it possible to give positive acknowledgment to someone?

Tell me exactly what your reasons are for being against this, because surely there has to be something you are not understanding.

Have you actually read ‘my’ posts, or did you just read Elvenbane’s post about there being automated grats/thanks, which I’ve made clear is not what I’m asking for, and just have a dark reaction based on that?

It’s spam, generally at a time when you are either ignoring chat (in which case it’s not seen and therefore pointless) or you are monitoring chat for cues (in which case it clutters it up with pseudosentimental nonsense that only gets in the way of what the user is scanning chat for).

I have kicked people from groups for less if they wouldn’t turn off a spam-generating addon in an instance or raid.

Here’s the thing. In a raid or instance or battleground or arena, it would be little more than an annoying distraction.

In the open world, you’ve got all the time you need to actually thank people and it wouldn’t take more than about twice to see that it’s an auto-thanks addon, about as insincere a gesture as a boss sending his secretary out to buy an anniversary gift for his wife.

Literally nothing would cause me to back off helping someone than seeing that.

I get enough of chat bots dealing with various customer service lines in my life. I refuse to interact with any that I don’t absolutely have to.

You think I’m alone in this?

Check out Love, Death and Robots, Season 2, Episode 1. It’s enough of a cultural issue that they made a short (and very good) film about it.

I’m literally dumbfounded by your explanation. How in God’s name, Yogg’s name, Hogger’s name, anyone’s name do you have it reasoned out in your head that something like this would be spam…? How in the ever loving actual blue hell are you thinking something like this would play out in order to be ‘spam’?

There are two possible scenarios in which someone will buff you – either in an instance, or randomly out in the game world somewhere. In either case, if an addon notifies you of the buff and who gave it, you may optionally choose to give the person a quick ty for it.

That’s spam in your eyes. Really.

Here’s what you’re FALSELY ASSUMING – that the addon I’m requesting would automatically give a thank you in open chat. NO!! That IS NOT WHAT I’M ASKING FOR IN AN ADDON!

Reeeeeeeead and Understand, then comment.

Someone buffs you.

Your addon says, “Thanks, <insert name here> for the <insert buff name here>!”

A bit later they do it again.

Your addon says, “Thanks, <insert name here> for the <insert buff name here>!”

At that point, the person who sent you the buff will either have seen both or not. If not, it’s pointless as mentioned.

If they have, however, and aren’t completely brain dead (and I could argue that sending thanks to a brain dead player is also pointless), they’ll see that it’s a chat bot response.

I know very, very few people who wouldn’t get irritated by that, partly for having been fooled into thinking they were genuinely being thanked and partly because it is a chat bot.

I think the one point being missed here is that

Automated thanks aren’t necessary

Phodge!

For God’s sake man!

I'M ONLY REQUESTING AN ADDON THAT NOTIFIES YOU WHEN SOMEONE BUFFS YOU!!!!!

That’s it!!! That’s all!!! This isn’t hard to understand buddy!!!

I’m not asking for ANYTHING automated!!~~!!~ NOTHING AUTOMATED!! No automated ty! No spam!

I’ll say it as slowly as possible.

I… am… only… asking… for… an… addon… that… notifies… you… when… someone… buffs… you.

Oh, I know, Fizzie.

I just figured he’d argue that this was a luxury, not a necessity.

<oops>

Literally everyone reading this thread missed that.

Yeah, you can do that easy in Weak Auras.

I’ll throw something together.

100%. That said I haven’t found anything, in a very brief search, that does that yet. I should be able to make a WA that pings you when one of the buffs are applied/refreshed.

Okay, if you’re gonna do the WA, I’ll look at a standalone addon for it.

Ok, thanks guys for looking into it. Let me know if you come up with anything!

2/3 people noticed it immediately…

You weren’t thinking automated response here?

Both of you misunderstood and should give me a xanax and a shoulder rub for the undeserved stress. Oh, and the addon, get me the addon. Ty <3

Got a few options here.

Simplest - if you’re an ElvUI user I can do it as a custom text attached to your nameplate, your unit frame, the buffer’s nameplate, or the buffer’s nameplate all with the offset from the target frame configurable by you.

I can output to chat with the channel selected by configuration - bear in mind that if you have it in your main channel, it’s likely to get lost in the scrum. For best effect with this option you’d want a dedicated chat window for this.

I can output to a fixed frame on the screen (invisible unless there’s a message in it. Configuration on this is a little tougher as I don’t really do much visual UI work and I’d have to kind of pin it in a best-guess location, but with a little effort you could alter the code to put it wherever you want).

Elvie is working on a Weak Aura for this - very configurable, but will require that addon to make it work.

How about, place the message on a button on screen you can click to say “Thanks” lol.
