Addon recommendations pls

As a newbie compared to the many veterans on this forum, I’d like to get some addon recommendations. I love modding games and seeing what I can change and improve.

So far I’m using Tidy Plates, MyRolePlay, Immersion (cannot play without this anymore), and somebody recommended me the GunSniperAudioPack when I complained about gun sounds and I’m absolutely loving it.

I’m also seeing lots of recommendations on guides to use the DBM (I think it’s called).

Raider iO is pretty useful.

The add on “GTFO” is good for letting you know when you are standing in bad stuff~

I use Elvui which is a complete UI overhaul

Mogit to look up armors and try out mogs on the fly

Allthethings for seeing what I may be missing for mogs/achieves/mounts

Rarity to track how many attempts it takes to get a certain rare item, mostly mounts.

DBM to give notices when things happen in raid encounters (super useful)

And Altoholic to keep track of things between alts without having to constantly log off and on.

Its a bit busy for some but ive grown attached to the setup.

I’m just gonna throw a bunch of the ones I use in here and what they do and let you decide if it’s something you’re interested in; and I’ll mark the ones that are really only useful at 120.

  • Deadly boss mods(DBM) basically has a bunch of timers for boss fights in dungeons and raids, and makes lots of noises for stuff to avoid/move away from/big boss ability being cast. It’s also useful because it will auto-communicate stuff to your raid members like a boss ability being cast on you so they know to move away, or you know to move away from people too.

  • Warfront rare tracker is basically to track what rares you’ve killed in Warfronts which is a piece of content at 120 only, but is very handy giving you information a bout the rares and where they spawn, etc.

  • Addon Control Panel. This becomes more useful the more addons you get, it allows you to pick and choose what add-ons you want active and saves those settings. Letting you create ‘sets’ of add-ons so you can switch around between using minimal add-ons and everything at once.

  • Badboy: Spam blocker If you’re noticing a lot of advertisements in-game, in general chats or trade-chats that are basically “Selling 9/9H, full 415, boosting!” etc and don’t want to see stuff being spammed(These are usually done by shady websites that spam all day.) it blocks all of that. If you’re constantly getting spammed by guild recruitment whispers and invites, there’s another one called Badboy_Guilded that blocks those.

  • Details Damage Meter! this is again something more useful at max level 120 but it tracks how much damage the group you’re in, or yourself is doing; along with other things like how much healing the group is doing. More useful for end-game stuff to see how well you’re performing.

  • DejaCharacterStats This one brings back more character information on your character panel, from haste % to crit, armor, and more that you can customize to see what you want. A lot of this is stuff that it used to show in-game that Blizzard has removed.

There’s a lot more but, they’re basically just useful for max level stuff

Thanks so much for the recommendations, everyone! And sorry if this is not the right community. I’ve become so used to just posting everything in here.

With mods like GTFO and others that make sound to tell you to move away, are those sounds annoying? One reason I feel a bit reserved about trying those is in case they just make a loud ‘beep’ or something.

Yeah, it’s pretty jarring but you can change the sound it plays and the volume

With DBM you have the ability to change the sounds - I usually use voices - not loud clangs, etc. Really loud noises make me jump - so the verbal warnings are better for me.

I think Pawn is really helpful and have just started using TradeSkillMaster which has made me enjoy the AH for the first time ever

Used to use Altoholic but then I switched to Arkinventory. That allowed for me to get rid of my bag addon and it has some pet info as well if you are a collector. I will also say Can I Mog It is a good addon because it keeps up with if you have unlocked an item for transmog or not across all of your characters.

Ah ok so you’re a roleplayer, there’s a new addon recently that I got of which should help in busy areas. I have yet to test it out, as I’ve been so busy. But I do have it.

It’s called “Listener”, helps organize chat more during roleplay.

If you’re a pet battler, “Rematch” also is a great one.

DBM (Deadly Boss Mods) is good if you plan on doing any raiding (and dungeons, but you don’t really NEED it for that). Some people will say to grab GTFO alongside it, but there’s so much overlap that I just find GTFO pointless. BigWigs is the alternative to DBM and I’m sure it works fine too.

You mentioned using MyRolePlay, and while I think that’s really all anyone SHOULD need for RP, the community has largely decided that TRP3 should be the go-to choice these days, so I recommend switching to that. It’s a bit more in depth, and while the addons ARE compatible with each other, TRP has certain Profile Templates that do NOT display fully on MRP. A lot of people don’t realize this and it can cause issues.

ElvUI is UI compilation I’d recommend you grab as well. It’s not needed for anything, but if you like tinkering with your UI it lets you change just about anything you could think of, as opposed to a lot of the other common UI addons that have a very specific thing in mind and therefore have more limited options. I believe you have to grab this from their website (just google it), but you still just drag and drop it in your addons folder, nothing fancy.

For a Damage meter (combat log would be more accurate but no one calls it that) I’d recommend ‘Details!’. It has more info and more options than the other options. Skada would be the more lightweight alternative. Avoid Recount despite it’s super high download count, it’s outclassed by the others and is really only still around because people are used to it because it USED to be the best.

‘Emote Splitter’ is decent if you find yourself typing too much to fit in a single post. It let’s you keep typing and it’ll split it up for you when you hit enter. Works for regular chat too, not just emotes.

‘Mogit’ is pretty universal these days, although it’s not -talked about- as much lately. It lets you browse/preview/save items and sets primarily to help you decide on transmogs. It also has a tooltip set to On by default to show the item model if you hover over it, rather than having to Ctrl Click to use the dressing room. You can turn it Off if you want.

That’s about it. WeakAuras 2 is fantastic if you need some help tracking various things for your rotation or a boss fight, but you have to either find or create the auras so if you’re just getting started I wouldn’t worry about that yet.

I’m the developer for MyRolePlay. c: … Actually i’ve been working to get it compatible with most TRP features. It has changed -a lot- over the past few months.

Whoa! I feel like I just bumped into a celebrity. I’ve been using MRP for such a long time. Just want to say that you, and many others who donate valuable time to make free addons, are fantastic people and deserve many praises

To others, thank you again for those great recommendations. Based on what I’ve read, I am going to try DBM, ElvUI and Listener a try for now.

I’ll try the ElvUI, Emote Splitter and Mogit, too, after I grow used to the new mods I add first.

Elvui is a pretty drastic visual change to your screen and button layout. When you do get to it I suggest looking up a setup guide on youtube as it can be a bit overwhelming at first.

Thanks for the support! (Also I see you’re on Moon Guard too :D)
