Addon Nerfing Article on PCGamer

With regard to the PC Gamer article posted today (this silly forum software won’t let me include a link to it, but the name of the article is “Blizzard’s making a huge World of Warcraft change: combat add-ons will be eliminated, with new features coming to replace some of their functions”):

  • I could live without DBM (or similar) addons, assuming encounters were designed without them. However, I cannot imagine playing this game without WeakAuras. As someone who doesn’t raid at all, I still use WeakAuras all the time and I think that, if it weren’t available anymore, I’d probably quit.
  • These addons are very useful and are part of the reason that so many of us continue to play a 25-year-old game. Why would you take the chance of upsetting or driving away loyal customers when you’re fortunate enough to still have viability on a game this old?
  • From what I can tell from the article, the justification for doing this is because the devs are having a hard time designing raid encounters. First, I’m not sure why this is suddenly an issue when things have been fine for a decade …but, more importantly, if this is the reason, then why not just disable whatever in raid instances? Or, better yet, allow them in raidfinder/normal, but then disable them in heroic/mythic? (Or something along those lines.)
  • It seems cruel and heartless to those who developed/created and subsequently maintained addons like DBM and WeakAuras. So many people have volunteered countless hours to make this game better for players. I truly feel that if these addons had never been created and expanded upon over the years, World of Warcraft would not be as popular or successful as it is today.
  • I have had a yearly subscription for at least 15 years now. I would cancel it and never return if I didn’t have Weak Auras. I consider it vital to my enjoyment of the game.

I could go on. But, my main thought is this: why fix something that isn’t broken? Is there a small minority of top tier raiders so upset that stuff isn’t challenging enough that it’s worth such a titanic shift with a game that is in very good shape for its age. I could make a list of other things that I think would make the game more enjoyable and better, and I’m sure most other players could as well. Why not spend the time working on those things rather than nerfing addons that have been fine for years and years?

you missed this part op

How set is Blizzard on doing this?

“Nothing here is locked in. My hope today is to begin a conversation about that direction, and what areas are welcome, what areas we have more to do to convince the community on, what areas we’re wrong on,” Hazzikostas said. "At the end of the day, this game belongs to our millions of players.

"We will be reading. We will be listening. This is a long path ahead. I’m curious to kick off the conversation and hear how people feel about it.

If this means less Broodtwisters and Star of Augurs it’s only a good thing.

Same. My entire UI is WeakAura based, but I wouldn’t mind seeing DBM gone at all.

This. Even if you had some kind of black and white hypothetical where you could either choose weakauras, or have raids and encounters that aren’t designed around the assumption that you’re going to need weakauras to complete them, I think the latter is ultimately much more preferable.

How so? As long as we can alter our game files they can’t “lock” anything, even if we have to start putting them in manually again.

they already posting things more or less saying that “you press one button then can leave for wrk/school and game will play itself for the next 9 hours and do all your WQ, dailies and play you toon in the dungeons and raids for you”.

its sad really.

They can prevent or encrpyt meta data from being extracted.

they’ve already started.

apparently WeakAuras, DBM, and Bigwigs are all going to be completely disabled and everyone is going to have WoW automatically play itself through Mythic+ 20s when 11.1.7 launches.

or so I’ve been told.

See this is the problem, we have addons because of how the game is made, and we have the game being made in such a way because of addons. It’s the whole “I need a job to get experience, but I can’t get a job without experience” issue.

If they made the game not need addons it would be too easy on that front, and if they made the game too easy it would force a lot of people to play something else. And even if they done a Raid+ like M+, it would get to a point that the game isn’t hard because it’s hard, it would be hard because you would be struggling to heal and kill things before it kills you, and that’s just artificial difficulty.

Gacha elements too! Auto game over man!

Not what was said in the interview at all

Between the interview today and the way they are doing Dinars, I’m convinced the people in charge of this game are mentally gone.

They have been smelling their own farts to the exclusion of everything else, they wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between eating chocolate cake and their own feces at this point.

This game is no longer for me.
