Heard about this Overwolf thing and not sure what’s going on with it. Heard about a few others to replace twitch like wowup and whatnot. What’s the deal here if someone can enlighten me. I don’t want to install bad crap on my cpu. Just want something safe and easy. Was thinking of just installing the addons myself, is that a good idea instead?
Don’t install overwolf they have an awful reputation.
It’s working fine for me. Looks almost exactly like Twitch and very easy to keep my addons updated. No intrusive ads so far, no strange behavior. I don’t know what all the hubbub is about.
I’ve been running regular virus scans and malware scans while Overwolf and curseforge are running.
So far it’s come up with nothing.
Yes my AV/antimalware software is working as it keeps pinging on my custom hosts file as well on certain nirsoft and microsoft essentials tools (lol false positives)
But there is value in using an addon manager that suits you. What might work for one may not work for the other. You should use what you feel comfortable with.
Here’s a link to alternative updater clients -

Give 'em a go see what you like to use.
I’ve downloaded it on Sunday, and I’ve had no issues, but Overwolf’s version of Curse Forge is still in BETA. If they are going to pull some shenagingans, it may come after they push their full version in December. I am going to give them a chance. As I think the criticisms are from a small subset of players.
I remember using the Curse client back in the day. It was fun to use and kept my addons updated on the fly if I left it running in the background which I almost never did for just…reasons.
Now I use Curseforge and it works ok. I will get all my addons updated as needed before the weekend as they say they are going to be down for a few days around the Shadowlands release next Monday.
I run some pretty hefty protection software on my computers and servers and they have never reported a problem with either Overwolf or the Curseforge client.
I have no idea tbh, I went with https://www.getajour.com/ a week or two ago because twitch was going to blow up anyways and it was still doing the thing where it installs the wrong client version of addons (classic on retail and retail for classic).
If you only have a few addons it’s doable, I have 100+ so that’s not really realistic lol
If I were a devious developer with even 10% of a brain I wouldn’t pull any shenanigans on launch, I’d wait until the community trusted my software and everyone was like “you guys made a big deal over nothing, overwolf is great!” then I’d start inching in shenanigans.
Can’t go full bore shenanny, gotta ease into it bit by bit so people accept the “little stuff” and you can grow into full blown shenanigans over time
1000 cuts is easier to get away with.
Launch with a zero ad, no issue client, and everyone says it’s fine all the stuff was lies.
Then later slip it in… and now it’s too late to stop it.
