There’s a ridiculously thin line for what’s considered cheating in this game and it would be nice if there was a stricter policy on what addons are allowed to do.
For example:
ElvUI has a feature that auto targets/shows whos targeting you, which comes that way out of the box.
Unless you’re using ElvUI that functionality isn’t available to you, and the game was never designed for targeting to be used in that way.
(and if ElvUI makes money off of it, is probably borderline unethical)
The reason why its a problem is because its impossible to setup an ambush, unless you are a class that uses stealth, and the addon feature your target might have removes critical seconds needed before your target takes the initial damage that would alert them.
Outside of ambush’s it gives an advantage in group fights where you might not know who might be the highest threat in a group that’s focusing you.
The point is, the example gives an unfair advantage by way of something that was meant to be only allowed for cosmetic or statistical reasons.
The way I see it, addons like that are akin to using keyboard macros that perform your rotation for you.
(which aren’t allowed by the way and why we have strict macro functions)
Edit: Let your post stand on its own merit they said, Its unnecessary framing they said.
Check out the discourse booming in here with a topic that takes their cheats away.

Is a mouseover macro that harms you without someone needing to target you also considered cheating?

Insinuating the macro was made in the game? Id say no.
But if it was only made possible via addon then id say yeah that would be cheating.
How is ‘target of target’ cheating? AFAIK that’s the only way ElveUI could accomplish such a thing, and seriously that would be annoying as friggin heck. What happens when 2 or more people are targeting you? It swaps your targets on you automatically to the last person to target you? Doesn’t really sound like an advantage, it would be a nightmare IMO.
As for that feature being on par with rotation keyboard macros, I say that is a stretch. Targeting is one thing, I wouldn’t put it in the same class as bots.
I mean weakauras and tellmewhen can have conditional icons set that prompt when the spell conditions are met in perfect rotations, with spells key bound and the rotation icons showing it’s damn close to keyboard macros, those rotation setups are not part of the base game, do you consider addons like weakauras and tellmewhen cheating also?

lmao what. automatically targetting whoever attacks you is built into wow, ive never had to manually target my attacker and i use the vanilla ui. sounds to me you want a boogey man to blame instead of admitting that maybe you’re just not as good at pvp as the other player

I don’t use ElvUI but TipTac Reborn will tell me who is targeting who and what. It’s info I like to know.
psure all that ELVUI stuff used to be in the old UI before all the changes.
target of target I’m certain was.
used to be we got a notice if someone was inspecting us.
we lost lots of good stuff in the default UI
the new UI has a combat targeting thingy that targets actively. Not sure how it works I just started using it and it’s ok. sometimes it hangs on the wrong things tho.
If it auto targets anyone targetting you its not allowed because it did something for you.
Addon functionality should be limited by what’s possible to everyone
They are possible for everyone. The ElvUI is free. Anyone can install it. Also, what it does is free. Anyone can write their own addon to do what ElvUI does.

You’re right. Blizz needs to put all of the best addons into the Native UI so we can stop relying on Addons. I like the way you think! I would love to have DBM, MDT, TomTom, Postal, Niggles Pet Teams, MaxDPS, SilverDragon, and Zygor all rolled into the game so I can stop running addons.
You’ve fundamentally (if not willfully) misunderstood the argument.
With ElvUI it shows you who is targeting you, even when they haven’t attacked you.
Which is something even vanilla UI in all its wonderful functionality is not meant to provide.
Its not target of target (which is still active), its not action target, it’s not vanilla targeting.
Its a script that reads who has what target and filters if you are their target and displays that you are their target. How else can I possibly elaborate?
Yes its free and yes everyone can install ElvUI or write whatever nonsensical program they want, but if it makes the level of play imbalanced that doesn’t spark a whole lot of joy for the people who would rather not. Not a god damn thing about boogey men.
That being said, that was an example and this was meant to be a discussion on other examples of addons that ruin the games experience.
I don’t mind defending my point or clarifying to those who want clarification.
But my god nothing has left me more apathetic to interacting with a community then on the surface level.
