So with SL on the horizon I’m doing some addon cleanup.
I was able to ditch all of the Blizzard_blahblah folders as well as some legacy elvui folders that are no longer in use, and am looking to do a little bit more.
I have a bunch of folders DataStore, DataStore_Achievments, DataStore_Agenda, etc. Anyone know what these correspond to? I no longer know. Altoholic maybe?
Does anyone know if there is any tangible difference between bigwigs or dbm? Which is more popular? Does one use more or less folders?
Also - what is the deal w/ altoholic. It says it moved, the name on curse is a “fork”, which why, if it is the go forward? What is the difference? Can I upgrade in place or do I delete current altoholic folder w/o blowing away my settings?
Are addons not allowed to make subfolders? I get that sometimes there are third-party dependencies or optional extensions, etc., but there are plenty of cases where there are not or like when those extensions require the same parent.
For example, why does Raiderio need 10 folders. Why can’t they just be nested under the parent RaiderIO folder which already exists.
DBM is more popular of course. Both have to use multiple folders as you don’t want to load all the modules for each raid at the same time
The difference is that it’s updated by another author but the original author didn’t want to hand over ownership of the original project, hence the new project. Not sure about migration of settings though
The amount of folders (addon modules) might be inconvenient for the addon list, but it’s a way to save memory (especially for Raider.IO) and keep the project organized
DBM is more popular. The main difference is Bigwigs is much less in your face. For example big wigs will just have an alert and maybe screen flash for the Uber death ray; you’re expected to know what that means.
DBM will have a big warning in the middle of the screen “UBER DEATH RAY - MOVE”. It’s much more hand holding so you typically find more hardcore raiders preferring Bigwigs since it’s less annoying.
Bigwigs used to have much less memory footprint but that was years ago so not sure if it’s still true.
I think they both use the same amount of folders but DBM has extras for older content if you download them.
The more hardcore raiders preferred BigWigs because it was maintained by a member of Method so it received more frequent updates during Mythic progression.
Now that Method’s effectively dead and Complexity Limit is sponsoring DBM development DBM is the go-to.
Good to know. I always preferred DBM myself. The only thing I preferred with Bigwigs was the ability to skin the bars. DBM needed a separate addon and that was outdated and only gave you one style.
