Addon button missing

So a hopefully quick preamble, I’ve played since vanilla, I’ve used mods in WoW & other games for years, but since TWW the Addon button has disappeared from my bedroom computer (brc) but is on my front room computer (frc). Both computers are identical except the brc has a slightly older graphics card than the frc.

Mainly I use Niggles pet team addon and it doesn’t come up on the brc when I open the pet window like it does on the frc. Searching for help all I find is the addon button is in the menu now, which yes on the frc it is and the other possible problem is the addon isn’t in the right place. It was. But just to be sure, the other night I made the whole WoW folder on C drive of the frc was available on the network and after I got in bed I deleted the WoW folder from the brc and copied it from the frc and ran it. Game works fine except, no Addon button, no Niggles pet addon on the pet window. Given how time consuming daily pet battles are, I generally do them after I lay down and it is a pain trying to remember or set up a team for each daily.

I saw a post that their issue with this was solved by going into the launcher settings and found that for some reason their setting was set to the beta version folder so they reset that, but my launcher doesn’t have a setting like that I can find either.

Anyone got any idea of what might be going on or what I can do to “fix” it?

Addons are not part of the official support responsibility of this forum, but you may get best-effort attempts here.

There is another forum with a specific responsibility to help with addin efforts: UI and Macro.

My thoughts about your reported situation: if the back room computer had any valid addons installed in the correct place, there would be an “Addons” button. So the problem might be:

  • the game isn’t installed where you think it is, and you’re putting addons into someplace the game is not installed in; or
  • the addons aren’t valid. Perhaps because they were not correctly installed.

The fact that addons work on another computer isn’t very useful, other than to generally demonstrate that it is possible to get your addon set installed correctly if it’s done right.

So the fact that I after deleting the copy of the install from the brc computer, completely copied the installation from the frc to the brc, ran the game and the game runs fine, leads you to the conclusion that the game isn’t installed where I think it is? And like, how hard is it to remember I have the system install all games to c:/games/“name of game”? That the addon goes into the C:/Games/World of Warcraft/retail/interface/addon/ folder. And that the addon that works on the frc is somehow invalid on the brc?

You copied an installation from one computer to another.

Your exercise is now to prove the installation you copied is the one the launcher is running. If the launcher did an install while you weren’t paying attention, it would not be running the copy you made, and it wouldn’t contain the addons you thought you installed.

Truly, your symptoms sound like the game instance you copied isn’t the one the instance is launching.

So, in the matter of minutes from the time I copied the installation, clicked the launcher and then launched the game, the launcher some how downloaded and installed a new version of the game? And yet there is only 1 world of warcraft folder, 1 retail folder, 1 interface folder, 1 addon folder…I don’t have classic installed, I don’t have beta installed. Just the one copy of WoW.

Well, enjoy troubleshooting this yourself if you ask for help and immediately reject it.

What help did you give? Other than recite for me to do the things I have said I’ve done?

Copying the game from one PC to another isn’t an officially supported method for install, and you’re learning why. Install the game the normal way through the launcher and then worry about testing the addon button. Like Sniperorc, I won’t tolerate someone snapping at me when trying to troubleshoot. Respond accordingly.

The game was installed through the normal way, including being up to date to the latest fix. The problem existed before I copied the folder over to the other computer. The copy just didn’t fix it.

I’ve used that method many times when for whatever reason one computer or another wouldn’t install a update properly. Official or not procedure it does work on a lot of problems.

And I don’t normally snap at anyone. I tried to make it clear at the start, I tried all the things that normally are listed as the culprit. Sniperorc was telling me the same things as well as insisting that I either don’t know where the game is installed or that the launcher somehow installed another copy without me knowing or where the addon is to be placed.

I’m happy to answer any questions that can help identify the problem, but insisting that I’ve done it wrong or don’t know what I know isn’t helping me. If all he had done was said, just to verify, have you done x,y,z? And I could say yes, I’ve done all those.

The addon worked just fine prior to the TWW update and the addon button was gone. I got the latest version of Niggles addon and installed it on both computers. I just hadn’t really worried about it until this weekend when I wanted to do the dailies for a change and realized the button was gone from the brc and the addon wasn’t working anymore.

The client is probably building a Interface folder in a different place then default, and each version (retail, classic, etc) will have it’s on path for install.

Try searching your hard drive for the Interface folder. Normally it would be under the retail path for TWW. But sometimes Windows wants to store in Users/PC name/OneDrive/documents or Users/PC name/documents.

It is in the retail folder, but I’ll double check shortly if there is another one.

Edit: While there was a folder for classic (nothing inside it), not sure why, never installed it, I didn’t find any other folders. So I just uninstalled, wiped what wasn’t removed from the uninstall and reinstalled the game while I slept. It seems to be working now. Just weird.
