I read on Wowhead that the addon manager programs, well they seem to be at odds or hate each other, I don’t know.
But, I use Wowup and it seems that it will be losing a lot of it’s ability to update my addons.
So, I’m worried.
I was under the impression that addon makers cannot profit or get paid for offering their stuff to the players – so, how is it that these managers are a problem?
If I am worried, then many must be. I think that it is time for Blizzard to step in. They need to put these guys on a payroll, they can afford it. Or offer their own addon manager stuff in game. Or something. Being at the mercy of some outside force really sucks.
Yes if you want update info with no worry, just bookmark the download.
Put it beside you icon for wow.
Do the update when you wish…just a tip.
Edit after the heart if it matters
Oh and less is more sometimes.
I use ShestackUI and Handynotes.
Auction one as well.
I don’t think Blizzard will pay addon creators because while they do create value for the game the usage varies. Many players might use DBM for example but others might only stick to specific encounters WAs/BigWigs. It’s better for the platforms they are hosted on to assist them financially if that is an intention.
I wouldn’t feel anxious about installing addons. They’re ultimately freeware made out of love for a game.
I was a developer for a animation edit program for my 2nd last MMO which had a class with broken animations so I made it so that program reduced the weird delay time for it’s skills. It was a labour of love but it’s not made as a career, I gave up on it after a patch broke it in 2018 and I hear someone else has apparently taken on the reins.
The same goes for WoW addons - they’re solutions people have come up for issues with the game and can be stopped at anytime by the developer. If interest remains someone new will take it on - perhaps even yourself!
They are not supposed to sell their addons. They can have a donation button, but they can’t require it to use the addon.
Addon managers are a completely different beast. The addon manager can be a premium service that you use to conveniently install things instead of doing it manually.
The rules on paying individual creators though … I don’t know how that legally works, unless they just get a cut of whatever fees are paid to the addon manager.
I manually handle my own addons though so it does not impact me.
Well, it would be nice if Blizzard would have an official, Steam-workshop-esque hub for these things, but … can’t say I’m surprised it’s not on their priority list.
You’re only at their mercy because you let yourself be. Learn to use your PC to manually update your addons and you’ll never have this anxiety again. It’s not hard.
They are not allowed to charge for special features, there is nothing in the tos against ad revenue or donations. But that is besides the point as you don’t actually have to pay a dime for the mods. They are still free of charge.
With the continuing popularity of World of Warcraft user interface add-ons (referred to hereafter as “add-ons”) created by the community of players, Blizzard Entertainment has formalized design and distribution guidelines for add-ons. These guidelines have been put in place to ensure the integrity of World of Warcraft and to help promote an enjoyable gaming environment for all of our players - failure to abide by them may result in measures up to and including taking formal legal action.
Add-ons must be free of charge.
All add-ons must be distributed free of charge. Developers may not create “premium” versions of add-ons with additional for-pay features, charge money to download an add-on, charge for services related to the add-on, or otherwise require some form of monetary compensation to download or access an add-on.
Add-ons may not include advertisements.
Add-ons may not be used to advertise any goods or services.
Add-ons may not solicit donations.
Add-ons may not include requests for donations. We recognize the immense amount of effort and resources that go into developing an add-on; however, such requests should be limited to the add-on website or distribution site and should not appear in the game.
Buggrabber (to generate error popup rather than the generic chat issue blizz has) is what I use. Tells me what even what lines are causing the problem/taints.
IMO, Curse/Overwolf is in violation of the spirit of that. But without Blizz being willing to step up and officially create their own addon management tool (Blizz please do this!!!) we’re left where we are.
