Add an In-Game Translator to Make It Easier to Chat with Ragnaros

Please add an in-game translator so that it’s much easier for those who don’t know Spanish and Portuguese to communicate with Ragnaros/Azralon/etc. realms, and vice versa. This will help break down the communication barrier so groups can become more inclusive and play at their best.

Funnily enough, it’s not really the “language barrier” giving those servers a bad reputation, it’s the high incidence of bad players in the pug world :joy:

It’s like, you can still be good at your class/spec/job without knowing a single word of English (see: EU and Chinese players)… the two are not really related.

As long as there continues to be a high incidence of bad players from a specific server, people will continue to be wary/untrusting of players from said server(s)

Every realm has their stinkers, but better communication in any form of group play is always a plus.

I’m gonna let you in on a little secret, at least about the Spanish speaking players on Rag and Quelthalas (can’t speak for the Portuguese speakers), as a native Spanish speaker: a lot of them actually can speak, or at the very least read English. They just choose not to engage. This is based on what I’ve noticed since Legion.

I normally keep /p in English, don’t switch to Spanish unless I need to. They totally understand what you’re saying, most if not all the time.

How do you translate “you’re a noob git gud skill issue” to Portuguese?

You could also check out language learning programs like Duolingo or Rosetta Stone and just translate it yourself… Imagine living in 2022 and only knowing one language, when there are soooooo many options to learn another lol

To be honest, asking people to learn a language that they’ll never need to know outside of a video game to play with people who they don’t know is unreasonable. I agree that the free educational resources we have today are excellent. But I disagree that people should be expected to make such a big commitment to understand what strangers are saying when they’re being insulted in a foreign language.

Well there are around 40+ million native Spanish speakers in the US alone and that number is still climbing. It’s a pretty common language… Plus, learning multiple languages is good for the brain. It’s also a requirement to graduate highschool and to graduate college with a bachelors degree. So what you’re saying just sounds like a lazy excuse to remain ignorant.

I speak four languages fluently, tyvm, and most Spanish speakers in the united states also speak english so it’s not like you can’t speak to 40 million people in this country. Learning more languages is good for the brain, and that’s nice, people should learn languages to communicate with people they love and people they work with. I don’t think it’s a reasonable expectation to learn a language to talk to strangers every now and then on the internet.

With the advent of cross faction play, will there be a learnable talent or toy I can use to communicate with and understand Orcish?

Lok’tar ogar!!

You’re missing the bigger picture, but okay. If you were actually fluent in four languages, you wouldn’t be saying what you just did lol…

What if the the other languages that you know are not Spanish or Portuguese?

I only took up Japanese cause in the gaming industry you have a lot of business with them.

You don’t know me or my life. But I can tell you that as someone who works in english, has family that speaks english, and lives in a predominantly english-speaking area, that all the time I spent learning and practicing the other languages hasn’t resulted in much. I mean sure I wouldn’t have been able to watch my favorite telenovelas, and be able to surprise my friends’ parents when I respond in their language when they’re gossiping about me like I’m not there. But it’s not like there’s a dire lack of english media in the world today or my friends wouldn’t just tell me what their parents were saying.

I’ve never understood the WHY there are so many bad players from there though? Like is there just a general culture of trolling other people or not giving a poop? I just don’t get how one region could be like this.

I think you’ll see enough non-standard language in wow (NPC names in particular) that just plugging in a system like google translate will output some weird results.
