Activision Diversity Space Tool

The tool in question might be used for future characters that Blizzard intends to introduce to WoW, or redesign existing characters.

Christie Golden’s dating life might be used for future characters, it still wouldn’t belong here.

You’re wrong, and it probably already has been.

It’s definitely a lame attempt at making more money. You people need to understand that this decision was most DEFINITELY NOT done for the sake of “Inclusivity” Or “Equality.” It was done to pander to a specific group of people in the hopes of gaining more money. BLIZZARD IS A COMPANY. A companies goal is not to improve the world but to make money!! Bottom line before you should even think to consider stuff like this. What encourages this sort of thinking anyway? Haven’t you people actually suffered before? Nobody I know IRL who has actually gone through anything and understood how they got there thinks this way, I sort of only find these lines of thinking in very inexperienced/young individuals. Furthermore, I notice that the entirety of their being is consumed by the idea that everything they don’t agree with is somehow apart of a globally combined effort to be racist/homophobic. It’s almost like they’re attempting to bend reality to their unrealistic favor. Of course, Not literally every single one of these people IS like that but you get my point. When will this end? Will it ever be like the good ol days, when we all knew one thing. That the bad guys were bad, that we needed gear and that we had to defeat them.

So what score does soldier 76 get?

The Hamster is a White American and the Robot is max score Ethnic/Racial diversity btw.

Also don’t conflate those of us who are Actually Socialist Or Communist with Lib-to-Left-Lib spectrum (eg your average Rose Emoji Twitter SocDec type).

Absolute disaster rooted in the Empirical Nerd desire to quantify all things and the lack of competent sociologists anywhere in the company tbh

As an accountant, I can confirm that this is probably what I would attempt to do if I was trying to solve the issue purely using numbers. You and I both agree that it wouldn’t work because people aren’t numbers, but this is definitely how we would try to derive a formula.

Honestly I think this would have worked if it existed as part of an approval process.

Art, story and creative teams produce something.
We run it through the test thingy the accountant made… and presto done!

The only mistake here is publishing it to the masses. Its like saying “you can’t put a dollar value on a human!” Well sure we can, thats what salaries and portfolios are.

Its a horrible thing but thats the society we have built. If this had remained a secret, people like Baal would have never known and this dystopian excel formula would have produced the diverse characters he asked for.

I cant believe this isnt a prank. How can this sentence exist as anything other than a punchline?

Somebody looked at that comically absurd statement, nodded thoughtfully and presented it thinking they’d really done something.

Lol & lmao @ anyone who thinks this “tool” would’ve produced anything good or competent

Alright I’m hooked. How do you see this playing out?

If they never revealed it and used it behind closed doors you would have never known. All you would have seen is some characters being released. Competent and “good” are subjective terms so what works for you might not work someone else.

The system that considers hamsters the white man of the rodent world and robots to be the most ethnic, whatever the hell that means?

Yeah I’m sure that would’ve provided nothing but authentic characters and great representation.

At the end of the day its a sausage, and people love those things. We just saw how the sausage is made and some people are overreacting to it.

They already did it with Overwatch and nobody had problems with them before besides the sexualization issue which Blizzard doesn’t seem to care about.

They used a bizarre tool developed in 2017 by King games on a video game released in 2016?

Weird use for a time machine if you ask me.

They showed how they measured existing characters.
The system works, because all that it is, is a scoring system for internal use that someone decided to publish a PR stunt.

There is nothing inherently different from this than making a character through a creative process with certain guidelines. All this thing does is say the diversity score of a character. Is it gross? Yes. Would it impact character making in any way? probably not.

As far as I understand it, this tool is not an AI generated the best diversity score character creation tool. It’s a measuring tool used to guide an existing creative process.
Probably made to combat implicit racism that may exist within a team.

Yeah then they frantically walked that back and clarified they hadnt been using this and wouldn’t be. Because it got a slightly worse reception than the coronavirus.

All I can say is I’m very happy nobody’s paying you for your creativity if you look at this and go “Seems fine”.

Because this was a PR stunt that went wrong.
If this had remained behind closed doors nobody would have ever known.

Y’all are losing your mind over a tool that would have had no impact besides a gross scoring system. Thats it.

I’m sure we would’ve gotten a weirdly diverse catalog of stilted and boring characters. And I’m sure I would’ve said it felt like a graph made them.

Only difference here is we have proof.

So overwatch for the past couple years then?

The only thing we have now is we see how a corporation tries to use math to introducing token diverse characters like they did before and people like Baal praised it.
If we want diversity just for the sake of ticking a box of in the representation form, this is the meal that was ordered. I hope people like Baal enjoy it because this is exactly what they wanted.
See? There is a tool now to maximize as much as diversity as mathematically as possible. Who needs world building when we got a list to fill?
