I don’t expect them to change overnight. And I don’t expect the game to suddenly become a platform for IRL education over ethnicity. Losing any of its humor. The game will likely always be grounded in a mostly western white male centric fantasy because of its roots. And even those guys deserve a game celebrating the positive aspects of their culture or satiring some of the negative aspects.
I do expect when a character gets added to the game its done with some real thought or care. Even if it’s just a [insert token food] vendor. The lore doesn’t need to be 10 expansions deep retconning another major character to play nice. I just hope blizzards content creators heed the advice to get to know real people a little bit. And when they do decide to add diversity or even adversity for narrative sake they don’t just reskinn with two or three sprinkles of traits like you said. Flip a morality or gender switch. Give it a certain hairstyle. And call it a good representation of a broad group.
For a single very minor npc it’s not really that bad. For all of the elves to be hit with that same broad stroke is bad. It doesn’t make them said ethnicity. However more options are always better. It’s nice individual players can contribute more by being more unique themselves. It doesn’t add cultural representation to the game like you said though. Just the option for individual players to explore it some. When dealing with character background and story lore there’s absolutely no benefit to just reskinning a character and flipping a morality switch. That’s kinda lazy… and would fit in and old school tone def story. Going forward I hope they don’t just do that to appease marketing or one single highly vocal group of tone def politically motivated players.
I have to wonder why he thinks it must be a psyop. At least in the Twitter biosphere, everyone ranks everyone else based on their ethnicity, sexuality and religion. It’s an objective representation of the way people on that site discuss things.

this is insane…how can you tell a good story and have good lore if you are more worried about wokeness than quality story writing?
Oh I wish games can be apolitical…if you want a gay character then fine, but they better be written well.
Bottom line: I want solid storylines and well written characters. I see this new tool as a step in the opposite direction. smh

Please don’t paint the extreme of extremists as everyone who is on the left. I am on the left but I never really understood the measures the extreme left would go to with their “woke” nonsense. Just because they scream the loudest doesn’t mean they speak for me.
As mentioned in my first post (2nd post of the thread), my main problem is that this scoring system could lead to characters being made that only exist to get a high rating. Basically becoming token characters.
That is generally politics in general. Like how the GOP will say that, “it is not a gun problem, it is a mental health problem” only to turn around and refuse to provide adequate funding into mental health programs. Cause that is somehow “communism”.
All announcement, no substance. Just a bunch of empty promises. It is like companies who only support the LGBT+ community during pride month. After that, they couldn’t give a damn.

Yeah I can see that, but when you simply use phrases like “the left”, one can view it as you referring to everyone who identifies on the left side of politics. It is why I refer to the extreme right as trumpists or Right Wing Nut Jobs (RWNJ’s). I don’t use a general term like “the right”.
Like Mitt Romney is on the right, but he ain’t part of the Trump Cult (or at least trying to pretend that they are).
