Account Character Limit

Revisiting this topic again…

There are now 24 races, meaning you can only have 2 of each (with only 2 to spare) before you’re capped. It’s a different game now in 2020, this cap needs to be doubled or removed.

If Blizzard wants to police the name reservations, put a stricter limitation on new characters without any activity for a certain period of time instead of 2 full expansions.

As far as previous comments such as “How can you maintain 50 characters, I can barely maintain the 13 classes”, some of us are casual and don’t maintain all of our characters in end game content. Some of us twink. Some of us just like leveling. Some of us use characters on multiple realms for farming. There are countless reasons why the current cap of 50 needs to go.

Fully agree.

It would just take one little number change, just one cute little number! I support you and agree completely.

Only thing is, the increase of database space is one of the few things that could reasonably cause sub costs to increase.

How much are you willing to pay for additional character slots per month?

I think that it would be nice to see this. Big agree!

I’m fairly confident that the price is negligible. For instance you can have 8 licenses on a single account, max the character creation limit on each, and not pay a dime for them. You can let the sub lapse for 5 years but the characters will still be there.

You may well be right about that. It could be something Blizz has figured into the cost-benefit analysis when they pitched Starter Edition accounts at their inception, though.

I’m not really sure if a character existing takes up much space, but I would imagine that the more active that character is or has been, the more deleterious it becomes to managing the database. I would expect the biggest data bloat for characters to come in the form of their completed quests and phasing information, though, so the hypothetical math on that could be run differently when pitching an increase to character limits for active accounts.

There are some private servers out there with no character limit I think. And I am pretty sure those are all run by some Russian guy with a 6-year-old computer. I think the only big cost would be if there were too many people online, which is not that big of an issue on my realm.

Haha that’s an excellent point! If an IBM can handle it, I’m sure the Blizzard servers can.

There wouldn’t even be an issue with more players online because you can only log into one character at a time.

Why can’t you support them by paying for another subscription?

I support this 100% OP.

We need more character slots!

I find another subscription bothersome.
Which character is where again?
I’d rather pay a fixed fee to unlock more slots to have more characters on one account, even if that would end up costing more than a second sub.

I wouldn’t throw any fits if they raised the cap, but at the same time, having more than 50 characters is kind of absurd, even in a game this old. If you “just like leveling”, there should be little issue with dropping one that’s already leveled that you have no endgame plans for to make room for leveling another thing.

As such, I also wouldn’t throw any fits if they route they go with these requests is a cash shop purchase to expand your account’s character limit.

To me it’s not. I’ve been out of work since last June due to… life happening, so I have all the time in the world. WoW has helped through some very tough times.

If you play 50 toons you can keep 8 accounts +++
wow1 x50
wow2 x50
wow3 x50
wow4 x50
wow5 x50
wow6 x50
wow7 x50
wow8 x50
All free with limitations

Actually reduced to 7 days when you delete a character.

Someone casual with 50 toons

  • 2-5 accounts
  • slots x100 - x250
Consider buying a second account, when you have 25 toons

The game is paid only by playing 15 mins every 2 days.

I don’t disagree, however there are players that just don’t like deleting characters. Myself included.

Truth be told, I would be happy if they just upped the limit to 75. That would give me the flexibility I’m really looking for in character creation. The biggest problem I face is if I make a new friend that plays on a different realm, it can be challenging to delete a character that I already have. Most of my characters are sitting at 100+ and that’s my cutoff for deletion.

I acknowledge it’s entirely because of me that I’m in that position, and Blizzard isn’t to blame, just giving you some insight on how I see it. I also support buying new slots honestly, ESO and GW2 do it and I see it utilized pretty often by friends. Their prices are a bit absurd, but I guess that’s the tradeoff on F2P games.

I already have 2 subs. Ideally though most people want the characters on their main account.

I was in the “you can only play one at a time” camp but as I grew more attached to my characters over the course of 14 years I realized I no longer just had a main and alts, I had a collection.

I have no intention of culling my collection so I can make other new AR’s should they occur, and most likely will.

I’m starting to think the character screen needs an update anyway but it would be something I’d be happy about if a character increase happened, although I have arguments both ways honestly.

side note:

Has anyone noticed the faction emblems on the character select screen? I thought for sure this implied the removal of faction restrictions for races. Seems like such a strange thing to add after so many years. (It can’t be just for pandaren, otherwise they would’ve added it during Mists)

I personally would only not care if they raised the cap, if they made the name expiration policy shorter. It’s not fair that players can hold so many names hostage on characters they rarely, if ever play. And no, I wouldnt count the time you log into a character for 30 minutes for a mount run, that you just log out right away either, and I know that’s a big reason to cap.
