You only have to do it once per device, yeah?

I get that it would be a bit annoying for people who aren’t fond of phones, but even an off-grid living type such as myself has accepted that you just can’t navigate society these days without one, at least not easily.

Either use the Authenticator or go play Skyrim.

The batteries on the authenticator like you have will eventually fail and then you will have no way to get into your account. You can’t replace that battery. Might as well switch it to your phone now so you can play uninterrupted.

If you’ve not signed into Blizzard or the games for awhile, you get to authenticate. It’s not often if you’re up on them a lot, but it’s not all the time.

People lose the little authenticator. It was older and there was no way to change batteries. Most people always have their phone with them. I have my authenticator button on the front of my phone (since I have 4 different authenticator apps) and it’s MUCH easier than having to sign into an email to click a link to get into the program.

And if you’ve ever had your account, with everything you owned, stolen and some things not recoverable, you’ld love having to punch that button on your phone to keep the idiots out. It’s worth pushing a couple buttons.

I got that warning “batt_low” a while back and had to migrate to the phone app. I did have backup fobs but they won’t work - they push you to the app.

At least I won’t have to worry about losing the fob anymore so there’s that.

It’s the full battle net app now I think, they’re in the process of getting rid of their stand-alone authenticator phone app right now

They should of allowed them to still work as they were purchased at some point. Ah well.

I ain’t even using an authenticator guess I’ll get forced sooner or later.

Back before I added an authenticator I would hear so much about accounts that get hacked, all their items stolen/sold, and toons just xfered, naked, or left alone I guess. Just think about all the games you have and achievements and it becomes kind of an easy choice.

It’s just common sense to use 2FA in the year 2023 with all the scammers/cyber-thieves/hacker types out there in modern times

For example, if you have bank accounts or crypto holdings and you DON’T use 2FA as an added layer of defense on said accounts then you’re a fool

Over on reddit I’ve read sooooo many horror stories of regular/everyday people who had their crypto holdings or wallet “cleaned out” simply because they did not have 2FA enabled and the attacker/hacker managed to get a hold of their account password

A bad guy/attacker gets your password and you don’t have 2FA as a “last line of defense”? gg

Yeah, got hacked back in Wrath before I got one of the authenticator key fobs. Fortunately they only stripped the character in the very first slot which was my hunter that I didn’t play for a while and not my second slot character which was the Warlock I was actively playing.

Haven’t moved to the phone authenticator yet but haven’t needed to.

I keep wondering, with the battle.net app authentication, what happens when you upgrade your phone, is it strictly dependent on just the phone number, or do you have to do a whole deactivate(old), reactivate(new) cycle to get the app to work on the new phone?

welcome to 20234

people lose their phones all the time too. I fail to see how this is gonna be any different.

You download the app on the new phone, then open the app on your old phone to get the restore codes, and put those into the app on the new phone. If you lose your restore codes you’re SOL, it’s a good idea to take a screenshot of them and send to your computer or something for safekeeping, or even just good old fashioned paper and pencil

Yeah, I was kinda annoyed by it at first. The only real stumbling block was I had a pay-as-you-go phone from AT&T (the phone work gives me is my primary phone so I don’t need much on the personal end) and for a while there the app was fussy with me. It had something about not liking VOiP numbers. But it ended up working after some fiddling.

I guess the real issue for me was I’m not a big fan of new things (probably part of why I still play this old game after 19 years) but since transitioning to the app its working fine.

No doubt in another 15 years they will migrate everyone to a surgically implanted bio-chip and I’ll hesitate again because of the whole “why fix whats not broken” thing.

But if you want to play with a safe acct sometimes you gotta take steps

There are pepple on this forum who have done just that ( or so they claim. I have no reason not to believe them. My skills aren’t that good, but I know people who are that good)

The upcoming changes are only for people who are already using their phone as an authenticator.

If you are using an old physical authenticator, you are free to keep doing so until the battery dies, in which case you’ll need to remove it from your account.

When I was looking into it I was given to understand that there are several video guides on The YouTubes about how to break open the physical authenticator and replace the battery.

Apparently it’s possible, but often they will fail to close up properly afterwards - but they do work. Kinda sorta. Some comments say that the authenticator “works, but doesn’t work” because it loses the time sync, so the generated codes are invalid. But, yeah, technically a skilled someone can change the battery.
