Not sure if this is better to post here or in the Beta forms, but it seems more like a technical problem.
I can launch and play World of Warcraft Retail without any issues.
I am unable to launch World of Warcraft Beta. I click “Play” there is a pause, and then the Blizzard Error window pops up. The last time I was able to log into Beta was around November 30th. There was a new Beta Build, I think on December 3rd. The next time I tried to login to Beta, on December 5th, I experienced this problem.
I have tried updating the Beta, scan and repair on the Beta, uninstall and reinstall the Beta. I’ve updated my graphics driver. I’ve run a RAM diagnostic (no error). I have no addons in my Beta interface. I have deleted my WTF folder (WTF is still gone, since I haven’t been able to launch WoW Beta enough for it to recreate the WTF folder).
The crash log indicates a common issue in software development, specifically an ACCESS_VIOLATION within a module named tmmon64.dll. This dynamic link library (DLL) appears to belong to Trend Micro security software [1].
Understanding the Crash
ACCESS_VIOLATION: The program tried to read from or write to a memory address that it did not have permission to access.
tmmon64.dll: The specific file causing the error is identified as part of Trend Micro’s monitoring software [1].
Beta Environment: The crash occurred in a specific beta build (64889) of the game.
This type of crash often happens when third-party security software interferes with how a game processes memory or interacts with the operating system, which can be more frequent in unstable beta environments.
Potential Solutions
Here are steps you can take to resolve this issue, starting with the most likely fix:
Update Trend Micro Software: Outdated security software can conflict with new game builds. Visit the Trend Micro Download Center to ensure you have the latest version installed [1].
Add Game Exclusions: Configure your Trend Micro antivirus program to add exclusions (exceptions) for the World of Warcraft executable (WowB.exe) and the entire game directory. This prevents the antivirus from scanning or interfering with game processes in real-time.
Temporarily Disable Trend Micro: As a troubleshooting step, temporarily disable Trend Micro to see if the crash stops. If the game runs without crashing while the security software is off, the conflict is confirmed.
Update Graphics Drivers: While less likely to be the root cause of this specific DLL error, outdated drivers can cause general instability. Ensure your GPU drivers are current using the official websites for NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
Run as Administrator: Right-click the Battle.net launcher and select “Run as administrator”. This grants necessary permissions that might be restricted when the antivirus is active.
Report the Crash: Since this is a beta build (<Config> Beta), Blizzard specifically needs this data. The crash log includes internal Jira identifiers (WOW12, JiraProjectId> 12300), indicating they are already tracking these errors. You should report this in the official Blizzard Bug Report Forums (or the specific beta forum you are using) and consider submitting a support ticket to Blizzard Customer Support [1].
Thank you for poring through the log and understanding where to find the useful info and taking the time to reply. I put WoW Beta in the TrendMicro whitelist…and…it worked! I’m surprised, because regular WoW isn’t in the whitelist, and WoWBeta worked before without being whitelisted, but I’ll take it!!
