This is partly in response to a thread (can only name it so much because CoC) that described how to bring back 12 million subs.
Though impossible, those individuals still exist.
Think back a long time ago. A very long time ago. Back in middle school days or high school days.
It sucks. There is plenty of potato-brained teenagers who like to (unfortunately) condone underage drinking or drug activity.
You weren’t one of them. You were one of those students who minded his or her own business and kept quiet. Then some jocks picked up on your intelligence and began to bully you.
You were bullied so much that you try to the best of your ability to escape to another group of students who sympathize with you. It doesn’t work per se. Then your parents noticed a few bruises on your body and contacted the principal. Long story short, those bullies were now transferred or expelled.
You remain with said group of students and were now in a new safe haven. But that wasn’t enough. One of them mentioned Runescape. You were curious and wanted to catch up to him or her in terms of leveling so you can play along with them.
You were too slow!
Your new friend then switches to World of Warcraft. You once again grew curious and followed in their footsteps. You were finally able to play with them! And friends of your new friend join the party!
You zapped those demons! Slayed the dragons! Tripped on a rock and died from falling off a cliff! But even then that didn’t stop you!

Sound familiar? Would you believe me if I told you those individuals in those generations existed?
The MMO genre will never die. Its as strong as the FPS genre.
I was a burnout and missed class so much, I once had my classmates make up an excuse for me missing class. I was only late that day. Woops!
I dunno what 80s tropes you’re running your assumptions on, but I’ve raided with weight lifters who took this game very seriously back in the golden days. The bulk of this game isn’t pocket protector-clad nerds.
Wow doesn’t appeal to new players because the levelling experience kinda sucks compared to most other games and our marketing is almost non existent.
Simply put it seems like people aren’t interested in MMOs but that’s because the game is currently so bad to start off with that it’s hard to get a player who hasn’t already sunk time into this to stay.
Wow, my high school must have been a freak of nature. There were no bullies and everyone was friends with everyone regardless of what stereotype group they fit into.
I was 21 when WoW released and 24 when I started playing.
I would have stood up for you OP! Our Varsity offensive linemen (well, 3 of us) started the unofficial chess club at our high-school. We were big nerds both figuratively and literally.
Jock nerds remind me of mama crocodiles. Just protecting the smaller nerds ( Altho to be fair the dads sometimes help get the babies to water like the mom )
I went to a smaller school, so may have lucked out. There were some cliques, but mostly everyone got along. We had peacemakers that were scarier than the bullies. lol Buncha corn fed farm boys more afraid of what their momma would do if they didn’t do what was “right” than they were of catching a few hands.
I just remember some jerks trying to give us attitude while we were all chilling in like. The one shady spot during lunch ( Because being goth in Arizona SUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS ) so the bigger goths who wrestled would get between us and the jerks. Yes the cafeteria existed but it was loud and you couldn’t really hear anybody so we were outside in this tiny little stage area because it had a power outlet. So we’d sometimes sneak a little dvd player over to watch stuff while we ate. ( The weebs were next to us so we’d watch violent anime together lol )
