what are my options if i want to swing a giant sword without being a pet class?

Warrior (Arms and Fury) and Paladin (Retribution). Fury Warriors get to swing TWO of them in fact. Druids can technically use 2H Maces and Polearms but you never see them swing it.

if i wanted to dual wield i’d stick with my death knight. fury is just a wannabe Diablo Barbarian. i wish blizzard could keep their games straight, or just add the actual barbarian class for people who want to swing oversized weaps in each hand. it’s looking more and more like ret pally is the way i’ll have to go. my favorite look is actually polearms/spears. do ret pally get those?
I’ll say more later but right now I will say that Titan’s grip, the ability that allows Fury Warriors to dual wield two-handed weapons, started in Wrath of the Lich King in 2008 and Diablo 3 came out in 2012.
barbarians could dual wield big 2hand weapons in diablo 2. they’ve even given mages the signature “frozen orb” spell from the diablo series.

Dw’ing two-handers is actually pretty fitting for fury. I’d love to see the return of 2h frost, but I’m not holding my breath. It’d be nice if there were more mog customization available. Like mogging your 1h weapons into a two-hander, or even an option for dw specs to have their weapons sheathed on their backs. I could work with that.
Turns out that Ret Pallies can use polearms. There aren’t many strength polearms though.
I can understand not wanting to use dual wield though.
I’m sorry to see you being forced to reroll. It isn’t right and it could be correct. If Blizzard would stop being lazy and bring back a playstyle that so many of us enjoyed.
Then you have the those blizzard fan boys who want to come along and poo poo on your hard hitting 2h Frost Obliterate damage by calming that their two little sticks are the better choice for frost and everyone should do it… I swear it’s like running into a vegan on your way to ruth chris steakhouse… we truly do live in sad times…

i rolled both a warrior and a pally. i’m loving ret so far, at least in the sub-30’s levels. arms seems okayish but sorta clunky? might change in higher levels. i’m swapping back and forth to get a feel for which one i wanna use my BfA 110 boost on.
Survival Hunter uses polearm also, I think.
if i wanted to play a pet class i’d have went with unholy and got my 2h fix that way. i want frost. frost 2h. if i can’t have that, ret pally seemed to be more my vibe right now.

ret is only fun when during wings. its ZZZZzzzZZZ outside of that.
I like arms because i’m using warbreaker every 20-30 sec and pumping with big test of might windows for 12 sec after that.
you really can’t make an informed call on any spec until you can experience the changes that the azerite traits make. ret got a little more palatable for me with empyrean power and lights decree. still like arms more though
Survival does use a polearm, but it’s also a pet class (which the OP wanted to avoid). I’m still glad you mentioned it though - it’s possible that someone else who reads this thread could find the suggestion of trying a survival hunter quite useful.
One thing that’s nice about survival hunters is that they can xmog a 2h sword.
I play my survival hunter occasionally when I want a class that can xmog to a single 2h sword without being a ret pally or arms warrior (I don’t care for the gameplay for either of those 2 specs).
Fury warrior is the toon that I play the most these days. I hate all the weapon restrictions that have been added over the years. The loss of SMF fury (and 2h frost, 2h ww monk, etc.) bothers me for the simple principle of removing options that previously existed, but on the bright side I can still use a 2h weapon (or two).
Frost is pretty much unplayable for me without using a 2h weapon. Gameplay-wise, I hate Breath of Sindragosa and wish it would melt in a fire.

Thats cute but d3 barb is essentially copy paste and aged version of d2 barb, whom could just inheritently wield anything except class specific items, and everything except 2h mace/axe dual.
2h swords? Id rock dual grandfathers or dual ebotd cbs any day.
Part of the reason on d2 that certain weapons cannot be dw’d is that they used actual logic when deriving who and how could hold what.
This explains the disparities between starting stats across the classes as well, and how much of certain stats (health/mana etc) are granted per stat point across all the classes.
And yet the backlash on every “bring back 2h frost” post determined this to need to have this sentiment to be shared on said 2h frost posts.
This needs to start trending lol
