So I mistakenly abandoned the wrong pet while taming other level 40 critters for the various abilities. If I keep one the new level 40’s will I still have the same amount of pet learning points when I hit 60? When the one I kept leveled to 41 he had only 10 points.
Your pet will accrue the skill points as it levels and it’s loyalty increases.
Sorry about your pet loss.
If I accidentally deleted broken tooth I’d probably almost pass out.

Don’t worry man. All pets have the same amount at a given level. You just need to get there loyalty up. You can also retrain them at the pet trainer.
My confusion was this. So after realizing what I did I went and tamed one of the spotted cats from Badlands. I quested with him until he leveled and surprised that he only had 10 points of training available. I was assuming he would get all the points back that my original cat had.
The likely reason he doesn’t have as many points yet has to do with his loyalty being very low. From the wow-petopia/classic site:
The actual formula is (level)*(loyalty-1). This means that a Loyalty 6 Level 60 pet will have 300 training points total
Also, something I noticed when taming animals to learn abilities is that one of mine had -1 training points because the ability that it had for me to learn cost more points than it would have had. So abilities they already know may be reducing the total you see.
