It happens. As long as they don’t make the Light and naaru another one-dimensional bad guy faction to beat, there’s potential for good story (though given Blizzard’s recent output and how writers putting anything resembling religious subject matter into their stories usually take sides at one extreme or the other, I have my doubts…)
Most if not all… and it likely won’t go over well since Yrel is well liked with alliance players last I checked.
I’m reminded of the Evil Overlord’s checklist.
I’ve played the Mag’har recruitment scenario… and how terribly written it is!
Sweeping the legitimate grievances of the Draenei against the Orcs under the rug (don’t mention the Iron Horde, eh Blizz?) and having the narrative bend over backwards to push some edgelord (I use that word alot, but if the boot fits…) “Light bad” story arc and assume our bitter, prejudiced guide Geya’rah is a source of reliable and unbiased information.
I don’t see Yrel’s Draenei as Alliance, and I was rooting for Yrel in her showdown with Grom.
Though AU Draenor is dying for an unknown reason, with both sides blaming each other “he said, she said” style (and certain fans jumping to their own conclusions).
My feeling when I played through that scenario is that it was intentionally written to be one sided, not that it was badly written to accidentally be one sided. What I mean is we as players know there’s much more going on, but from the character’s perspective, what you see is what you get.
We went there to recruit potential allies, with no knowledge of what has transpired since the last time we were on Draenor. With our first point of contact being the ones we were sent there to find, and with our only real goal being to recruit them, there was no reason for us to question the reasons given as to why the lightbound were attacking.
My thoughts on it anyway.
Evil or not; you don’t force someone into servitude against their will. He was literally struggling and screaming to get out and she refused to take no for an answer.
I also thought it was one-sided.
So was a certain banshee queen by horde players. I still get a bit sad when I play through silverpine and see how Sylvanas used to be.
Not necessarily. It most likely was not just naaru. The Light is a very unknown mysterious realm, like the Shadowlands was before this. We know the naaru have “keepers” who are probably similar to the Eternals or Void Lords. But there’s likely many different creatures and types of Light beings living there besides the naaru. I’d imagine their invasion force had some variety.
Denathrius was just too good looking. They couldn’t take his oppressive style any longer. Z’rali did spend countless years in the venthyr torture dungeon and now is unable to ever return to the Light. She’s right to be a little angry at Death.
I think the naaru are the same as before though. Generally they’re still very good beings who support life. For the Void invasion the Light doesn’t care about the afterlife. The SL is on its own there. A common enemy doesn’t really make them friends. I’m really interested in learning more about the realm though and who actually leads the naaru. But I think it’ll still be a long time until we get to that point.
Chaos and the Void are not positive forces in the cosmos.
The Shadowlands has been invaded many times.
Nor was the Naaru invasion of Revendreth their only attack. When you’re checking epitaphs in Maldraxxus with Draka, there’s also this reference:
good and evil is a concept these days.
like sargeras wanted to purge and restart everything, the demons just followed because they had fun.
we kill things to protect our loved ones, Except kobolds, they kill for treasure and ear-wax candles
i kill mosquitoes when i’m in a bad mood
…
You are doing the lords work…
most of the time i’d just shoo them away until they give up
my mother’s a buddhist and i’ve been taught that killing a living being is a sin
The Naaru are WOW’s equivalent of Angels. (No the Kyrian are low-grade psychopomps)
And the heavenly host is an image that fits in people’s minds right along with solitary arch angels.
I’ve always liked the vision of the Light from the perspective of the Void that Alleria sees in the Thousand Years of War story:
Alleria began to see visions. Terrible, terrible visions.
She saw the Light moving through the cosmos like a ravenous predator. She saw it touch the minds of Azeroth’s mortals—a touch that corrupted them forever. She saw generations live and die in invisible chains, bound to a force that granted them fleeting moments of peace in exchange for absolute obedience.
She saw war. She saw the forces of the Light striking back against the Void. She saw darkened worlds burning in holy fire. She saw millions of creatures encased in luminous crystals the size of mountains, sustained by the Light and unable to die. Warriors of the Light were monsters, corrupting and consuming everything they touched.
Kinda . . . And I hate it. I miss the days where the light was a force for good and the only ill done by it was in the hands of fanatics (which these days seems like anyone who embraces the light). I get it “it’s morally complex like real life” but ya know it’s refreshing when we get something clearly good or evil these days. sigh. Getting sick of the grey everywhere personally.
Not necessarily an army of Naaru.
Think about Shattrath (TBC, not AU)
There were like, maybe 3 naaru, then a set of two armies of dranei and Belfs, and then eventually the armys of Silvermoon and the Exodar when we hit Quel’Danas.
An army of the light isn’t necessarily just Naaru. The scorched area of revendreth is also full of light elementals, so maybe those too. I think the Naaru’s biggest power is to motivate and encourage people to act willingly in the naaru’s best interests. I’ve even seen arguments that the Horde Symbol is just a Naaru.
Ok so heres a thought… If Void Lords spawn Old Gods… what do Naaru spawn?
So TLDR, Naaru army isn’t just Naaru, just like how Void armies aren’t just Void Lords.
Evil is subjective. Nobody thinks they’re the villain of their own story.
But as to my original point; which you took out of context; you shouldn’t enslave people against their will just because you have differing opinions.
Which is what X’era tried to do to Illidan. Which; to me; makes her in the wrong. The Light is not a benevolent force for good.
