A question regarding "distance" in WoW-world

So how exactly does WoW measure distances? I mean like feet and yards.
I use my covenant ability “soulshape”. It says in the tooltip that it teleports me forward 15 yards. That’s 45 feet, right? But from all of my testing it, there’s no way it moves you 45 feet, unless I take absolutely gigantic stride! By my estimate, it’s around 15 feet at most, or 5 yards.
So how exactly DOES WoW measure distance? Is there some weird formula? Are our characters disproportionately larger than they appear?

I don’t know, but I think it’s about time some aliens invaded with the superior metric system.

well, to be honest, there isn’t a HUGE difference between 15 yards and 15 metres.

It’s it roughly 10%? That becomes huge as distances get larger and larger.

it’s 8.5%
15 yards is 13.75 metres. in all it’s a 4 ft difference once you count 15 yards compared to 15 metres.
it doesn’t account for the huge visual difference between this supposed 15 yards and what appears to be barely 15 feet when you use Flicker.

Given that we can cross continents in like 5 minutes, distance is wonky

Part of the issue with things like Soulshape – or other teleports like blink – is that it takes the elevation of the terrain into account, albeit poorly. So if there’s a little incline you can end up traveling a smidge of the distance or not at all.

Blink has forever had this issue, its supposedly 20 yards, which is 60 feet or around 18 meters. That’s along damn ways, but you clearly do not port that far ahead when its used. I have no idea how they measure distances in WoW, but that yardstick is not kosher.

A yard isn’t really a yard in wow, think of a yard as being a foot. Blizzard doesn’t know what a yard is.

a game yard isn’t the same thing as a real life yard

Honestly they’d probably be better off just not giving the alleged distances in exact measurements, because all it does is lead to confusion. Just say “a short distance” or “a medium distance” or something.

According to Game theory’s video on the sword Azeroth is larger than earth in total mass and size…so maybe measurements aren’t the same?

Its like the storyline, changes every expac so why bother paying attention.

Maybe everything on Azeroth is gigantic relative to us. And what appears to be a ft to us is a yd to them.

Supposedly, Druid Wild Charge has a 5-25 yard range in cat form. Seems like that takes me a lot farther than Soulshape. I’d say it goes more like 10 yards.
