I thought I might like to record a video of a few things in WoW while I was gaming to show a friend on FB, but I have no idea how to do it.
Is there a simple, safe way of doing that without having expensive equipment or software?

My Windows Laptop has Shift+G to open up the Game Bar and start recording. I use it to record little snippets of WoW when needed. Record what you need and share however.
If you play on anything other than WIndows, I can’t help.

You can also look into getting a program called OBS. It’s free and good as well.
