A comment I made triggered this idea, and if Blizzard isn’t thinking of it, they are missing out on a grand gold making thingy.
The idea is: exterior housing skins.
Make it like transmog for characters - you collect housing appearances. Want your Alliance house to look like the Mage Tower in Stormwind - you can get that. Maybe your Horde to look like your favorite building in Silvermoon or Thunder Bluff? That’s on the list.
And then, create an appearance tab and if you want to change your house appearance you can - for an undoubtedly substantial gold cost. So it doesnt cost to get the appearance, just to reuse it.
When they were showing it off, there does appear to be a few exterior housing choices available right now. So, them adding more in the future should entirely be possible I would think.
If you’d read the article, you’d see how cosmetics are being handled: the same way they do other cosmetics on the shop, with the majority in game a small number on the shop.
I hope it is a thing, and that they expand it. Rather than creating variations of housing designs you pick when you make a house, if its something that can be adjusted or changed as part of a cosmetic feature like a house transmog, that would obviously provide the potential for a huge selection of home appearances.
Also, have you heard how we see the houses in the world - as in, if I have my house outside Stormwind, and I ride out of the city and approach the area. do I see my neighbourhood and can I ride into it, or is it only reached by some form of portal?
