A moment of silence for a 10 year old companion

We’re about to lose a friend who has been with us for just over 10 years, in a little over 3 hours… We should hold a funeral service for the Mists of Pandaria Talents System… You won’t be missed…

(My opinion anyway)

I am so glad to see it gone. They worked in MoP, honestly like a lot of classes were actually really good then but the idea was always way less fun for progression and talent shavent felt good since Legion when they stopped giving us new ones.

Yes the new talent trees aren’t perfect and yes they give us abilities we have but they allow more customization and it’s a good blend of old and new imo.

Time will tell how it pans out but I’m excited to see how they go.

I couldn’t care less about talent trees. The old ones were stupid and just gave the illusion of choice. The present ones are fine. These new ones are meh… can take them or leave them. I’d rather the dev resources have gone to other things.

It might be…

New talents have potential, but in typical Blizz fashion, they manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It’s looking good for some specs. But some specs are locked in to one or two builds and still manage to have fewer abilities than what they currently have. I’d also wager that some of the build variety that currently exists on beta will get squashed before making it to live.

I enjoyed the talent rows in MoP.

They got less and less enjoyable as expansions came and went though.

I always preferred talent trees to the rows so I am glad we are moving on.

What exactly does this mean? Practically speaking, both versions of these talent systems permit the option of choice.

One system just has more choices than the other, and people generally prefer having more options in MMOs.

The MoP talent grid has never been the same once they removed the glyph system that worked in tandem with it.

Cookie cutter builds were such a thing that it made the entire talent tree system ridiculous. You didn’t really have any choices if you wanted max performance in your spec. You had the illusion of choice, not actual choice. It was such a laughably stupid system.

I mean, if your goal is to play in max performance mode, then you don’t have any choice other than the one that will yield you max performance. So from your perspective it doesn’t matter what system is in place, cuz you’re always gonna go for the option that’s the best.

Not everyone has that perspective tho or plays the game this way and likes to mix things up a bit. The current “pick 1 out of the 3 talents every 15 levels” is very boring for these people.

So the fun of the new talents is that you get to pick new talents every couple of levels instead of every 15? Also you can mess up and make an awful build? Yay?

Illusion of choice? LOL.

So when I chose threat of thessarian to dual wield frost it up, it was an illusion? Or didn’t choose it for 2hander frost… It was an illusion?

The hoaxsters…

If you meant more cookie cutter, sure, but you still had choice, and I didn’t always follow some icy veins guidline. Half the time they sucked anyway.

So looking forward to playing tonight, the sinful brand build will finally die out and I can play something I find more enjoyable. I am looking at you momentum, my old friend

Yep. It’s an ages old concept that the lesser among us have consistently failed to grasp.

Once they stopped adding to the MoP talent tree post WoD it was the beginning of the end.

This a popular, yet false claim. This is a meaningless phrase. It’s a propagandistic phase that the designers came up with to seed into the community because they simply didn’t want to keep modifying the existing trees. Design work is really hard. I understand that, but the old trees in no way gave the illusion of choice. Players could create all sorts of builds with the old trees.

Just because a minority of players went to 3rd party websites to copy their builds still doesn’t make any of the choices illusory. Players still do that with the Cataclysm trees. The Classic trees had 5-10 individual choices per 10pt tier that a player could make as they progressed in levels. The Cataclysm gave 3 choices per 15 levels. Now what’s really different here? Spoiler, it has nothing to do with any illusions. There’s simply less choice. Less freedom. Where is this illusion we keep hearing about? This is a simple arithmetic problem.

The new trees are great. Lots of real choices to be made. There are many players like myself that make our own choices, do our own theory crafting and don’t rely on popular websites to tell us what’s best. There are many players that make talent choices based on Roleplay, based on thematics, and based on aesthetics and when you’re limited to 3 potential choices per 15 levels down from 5-10/10pt tier that’s simply less potential choice. So, if anything is an illusion it’s the idea that the Cataclysm talent system was a good idea.

Classic tree’s were fun. I got to make hybrids, a Holy Disc mix up.
Retails is cookie cutter and boring. Dunno how DF is but hope it’s better.
