But I was definitely expecting the phases to have a little more original content. That’s the impression I got from the reveal at blizzcon, and that is kinda what I went on trying to sell this to my buddies.
But… BFD is the same, just revamped fights and gear.
I was hoping for a new Zone, or at least one all new 5 man.
The ashenvale event really is the closest thing to new but it’s really just NPC spawns in the zone. Not all that spectacular.
Like I said, still fun, still loving it.
But I would be lying if I didn’t say I am disappointed with how same ol’ same ol’ the game is outside of runes.
You’ll get a lot of flak but I agree. The amount of new content is extremely small. This would be fine if the phases were like 4-6 weeks long. But the phases are very long.
I think phase 1 was such a “success” because we didn’t really know how much new content there would be, and everyone played with their own ideas of “classic+” in their heads. Now in phase 2 I think everyone knows exactly what SoD has in store, so I think we will see a more accurate picture of game population.
Keep in mind, for as large as Blizzard is, SoD was considered an experiment and did not have huge resources allocated to it.
At blizzcon they showed 2 “senior software engineers”, and checking their linkedin revealed they have 8 direct reports each. So the SoD has at least 16 devs, 17 with Aggrend. The total is probably <25 devs on the project.
Hard to make lots of new content with a small team.
While you’re probably right, leveling and the open world being part of the game is very much in the spirit of any flavor of Classic. I’m sure if resources permitted, Aggrend and co. would absolutely dedicate them on leveling content.
Endgame being the only game is an attitude that came much later.
That’s like… most of the content. The encounters, the flavor/lore, and the gear.
The BFD flavor/lore did get remixed. It’s not intended to be new content though, it’s building upon, improving, and deepening it. The new Void Akumai stuff, the Cultist traitor, Xalatath, the fallen star, etc added to the flavor of BFD.
But yeah I mean if you were expecting this to be a full expansion I don’t know what to tell you.
I will agree in one sense - on the PvP front, Ashenvale just being target dummies and not a new frame to engage in PvP is disappointing. Sometimes you get epic fights and that’s awesome but the event doesn’t do that great of a jump forcing the issue.
That’s why I’m hopeful about STV. The event IS the PvP, and its a new type of PvP we haven’t really seen before in WoW (zone-wide FFA).
I mean how much more new do you want when level cap is only 25? The starter areas are iconic and no room to add a completely new zone. Any unused territory would have you corpse walking through existing zones. I’m sure this kind of thing will happen P3/4
