A "Dragon" should be a class, not a race

I have put the idea of a Dragon Class up for grabs before, however one of the most common responses is to instead make a “Dragonkin” race instead of a dragon class, so I would like to explain why Dragons should be a class, not a race.

  1. To clear it up: How a dragon class would work. Much like druids, A Dragon class would be able to switch from a human or dragon form, making use of a DH like system of metamorphosis to employ the power of a dragon. Specs would be based off of the various dragonflights, with the black dragonflight being a Tanking spec and the green dragonflight being a healing spec.

  2. Why would it be a class? This is because, as we know, Dragons take just about any race as a form when not in dragon form, as we have seen human, gnomes, elves, and taurans being dragons. This is the main reason they should be a class.

  3. Why not a dragonkin race? This is because the dragonkin have next to no connection with either of the factions, and would most likely standout heavily among the races. Also, what classes could they be? Warriors and maybe hunters? They simply don’t make sense as a race.

All in all, it is clear that if dragons come to the game as a playable ANYTHING, then they should be a class.

I will take a pass on the “dragon” class but I wouldn’t mind seeing a dragonkin type race added. You can take look at how D&D 5th edition accomplished it with their Dragonborne race.

That’s like saying Goblin should be a class.

I’d roll Human Goblin tbh.

I don’t know if it’s lore friendly and this is just me dreaming but I think it would be so cool to be lesser dragons like Aronus and Calen.

Black and blue go to the Horde and red and green to the Alliance? I dunno, like I said, just dreaming.

HMT Dragon already exists too, Ebyssian.

Would be the best way to implement them, as dragons seem to be able to choose whatever humanoid form they please.

But… dragons are a race. A class is like the character’s job; being a dragon isn’t their job, it’s just who they are.

Also, don’t you think playable dragons would possibly be sort of OP, maybe?

Well, you know, it was your idea - dragons as a class. So the question needs to be asked. Which races can be dragons?

Oh for sure (got Legion Loremaster) but mentally I was thinking of a large flying cow breathing fire instead.

Ah, like the hybrid forms in BoF3~

That would be amusing for sure!

Yes, they are. HOWEVER, there would be no sensible way to implement a dragon as a race without sacrificing their ability to effectively be whatever “Race” they wish to be while not in dragon form. See the HMT Dragon, The Night Elf dragon someone linked above, and Chromie.

Depends entirely on how they could be implemented, although this is a fallacy at best. Don’t you think that any class could be OP if it’s full lore potential was actually put ingame for us to play?

I’d like better to see Dragon abilities being represented as a full class than as just a couple racial abilities.
Also, being a class covers very well the fact they can shapeshift into any mortal race. And it eliminates the “which faction should dragons go to” without resorting to neutral race yet again.
Yeah. I fully agree.

Could you imagine being a level 1 dragon and getting your butt handed to you in a starter zone quest?

Dragon’s aren’t weak, ever. Even baby dragon’s should be major threats. This idea just doesn’t work.

So… dragons, except capped at a maximum 50% dragon-ness? Dragonosity?

Any race. We know dragons can take up any race as a non-dragon form, which is exactly why they should be a class to account for that.

Oh, like worgen. They’re a race, with a non-worgen form. So… worgen should be a class?
