A decade of lost WoW knowledge

The worst part of blizzard deciding to randomly make new forums and delete the old ones, now every single bit of info shared with people since the early days of wow, is lost.

Try it…google a question related to wow, a glitch and how to fix it, where to look for x y z, etc. It takes you to the main page of these forums instead.

For example, I’m having an issue with something, trying to figure out if it’s an addon problem, a bug, or I’m missing something…I have clicked 3 links, all of them broken and take me here. All of them looked like they would have had useful info from the preview.

You can try pasting the link into the Wayback Machine and seeing if the threads in question were ever picked up and preserved.

The system can be rather sluggish at times though, so be prepared to spend up to two or three minutes waiting.

Also try to use the Cache, not all threads were preserved this way, but it’s worth a shot.

The old forums being closed is particularly hard on the addon/macro community. Lots of tips, tricks, and techniques for writing WoW-flavored Lua code that aren’t properly written down anywhere else totally gone, just like that.

I get that keeping the old forums running was costing them money since they were dynamic code (PHP I think) pulling from a database, but they could have at least found a way to render it all into static HTML, which would’ve been dirt cheap to host in perpetuity.

what glitch?

youtube or WoWhead especially if it’s from a decade ago.

Now don’t get me wrong… these new forums are garbo.

Ahhhh…that’s why !! I just tried to get info on the recent guild tab issue and kept getting sent to the main WOW forum page instead of specific post. That’s unfortunate. Why the heck did Activision/Blizzard delete the old forum information ? There was a wealth of knowledge there collected over the years !! Maybe it was $ saving initiative ?? IMO…it’s just another small thing ( to them ) that could have an opposite affect, compared to what their bean counters are telling them, to their bottom line.
/thinks : “geezz, what the heck?”

I knew something was up when trying to search old stuff this past week. Damn shame indeed.

Old lore discussions completely erased. A lot of roleplayers have contributed a ton of info and insights but now it’s just gone. The snip-it of it is in the search but it’s mostly gone now. Sad to see it because there was a lot of helpful and interesting stuff discussed.

And that’s what I’m upset about, and why I wish they’d at least keep UI and Macro around.

And I don’t know, MAYBE GIVE US A HEADS UP SO WE CAN SAVE STUFF

You just need one extra step when clicking on the link. If you look just below the link, you will see the actual website. Just to the right of the website is a drop-down arrow. Drop down that arrow and click “cache”. It will take you directly to the old forums.

This has been verified several times. Just remember, don’t actually click on the link to go to the website, just drop down the arrow and click on “cache”. Clicking on cache takes you to the old forum.

I know there’s other ways to get the info, but often it was easier to just google, see “hey this person had the same question, lets see if they got an answer” 9/10 that is how I’d get my quick replies to my own issues or helping a friend or guildy with something.

Most of the info that was on the old forums is now irrelevant and/or out-of-date.

Eh, you’d be surprised how much of it is still really helpful, especially when it comes to the API.

Sadly, I can’t even find the up-to-date formula for armor calculation.

I wish we had a heads up, so we could at least attempt to save all the important stuff.

Yeah, any search about questions might lead to those forums. It all gone now =/

we were given a heads up when people were told to bump threads of importance so they’d be carried over to this new forum.

all older versions of the forum have gone from “read only” to ceasing to exist.

searches will still bring up threads from the old forum, and they can be viewed using the “cached” option.

yeah I was looking for an old thread yesterday and got redirected to the new forums. Pretty sad.

Sooooo this is what happened  …just another reason for people to become frustrated and unsubscribe and Blizzard seems fine with it!

They didn’t tell anyone and I know for a fact there is someone out there that would have archived the entire old forums

This really just goes to show us that Blizzard doesn’t care about the player base at all, all they want is our money!

yeah… google did.
