A curious question

i have had this thought in my head for the longest time but why is blizz so hard on the no spaces in character names policy? is it cause it would make moderateing character names more of a challenge? or is there more to it? Apologies in advance if asking this breaks any forum rules

I have always wondered why I couldn’t put a capital D on my name…when I sign into other sites I always spell it MouseD…but blizzard won’t allow me too…I Know there is a special D you can do with alt key combo but I didn’t want that in my name…

Could be that spaces might be used to get around other rules (like making yourself “F iretruck” without the middle bit)

Also the no capitals midway is probably to prevent multiple words in a name which they seem to not like.

Understandable immagine they’ed have to fine a way 1 so you could only have one space as a limit and 2 have it so both names would need to meet the name langth limit somehow obviously i guess it would require a substantial amount in terms of restricting what names can be used and in what way

If I had to guess? Way back in the day, esp on older systems, file names and integer names could not have spaces. You had to make it continuous. We used to insert an underline _ to get around that. Picture1_best_cat.extension

I suspect that the way they built the database it requires our char names to be a continuous string without the spaces. Further, it is stored as charname-string-server_name. Then next it goes to WoW license, then Bnet ID number.

WoW released in 2004 so the database structures and rules were much older.

That still doesn’t explain why I could use a capital D instead of a lower d in end of my name…
