A courteous word about LGBT representation

I am also not straight and while it may be a little pandering its still nice to see and literally hurts no one except those that let it hurt them

It’s Blizzard’s writing. I enjoy it when it’s fun and corny and making fun of itself, but when you examine it and look for plot holes or ask “is it meaningful?” then you’ll be disappointed 100% of the time. I feel like the last meaningful story we had was with Arthas in WotLK, and Jaina’s story in BfA and that was only cause of WC3’s buildup.

Then SL came and took itself too seriously, and it really shows their weaknesses. They can’t do what ESO/FF14 can, so DF coming along and injecting humor and corniness again is honestly a good thing.

I unsarcastically love this. And I unironically want to subscribe to your news letter

  • The crafting tutorial NPC that gives you a Reagent Bag is located at the Ruby Life Pools, you help him craft a gift for his lover.
  • The crafting orders tutorial NPC can be found south of Ohn’ahran plains. I believe the place is Forkriver Crossing, not too far off from the entrance to the Azure Span.
  • The last one is in Valdrakken, which is separate from the previously stated zones.

I would probably be bothered by the repetition of explicit, unsubtle romance. Admittedly not as much as I currently am, and probably not to the point of consulting the forums about it.

Though, I feel like this is besides the concerns I brought up:

It would be erroneous to deny that the amount of same-sex romance themed quests in Dragonflight are an effort for more representation. This is a good thing, but World of Warcraft has scarcely shown any hard difference from the real world in terms of human relationships, besides the occasional joke character. Neither has it shown a notable difference in proportions of sexual orientation. There is a rule in storytelling: If the story doesn’t tell you about something, the reader will fill the gaps with their own knowledge of reality.

To suddenly have such a high density of same-sex couples in a single time frame feels out of touch with what the game implicitly established for almost two decades. In order for accurate representation to be maintained, I should have come across around 40 heterosexual couples with the same quest relevance, which would be enough to make me wonder if there isn’t some sort of love pollen floating around in the Dragon Isles.

Tell that to my harem of NPC’s I frequent in Shatt. I mac it too all the ladies and a few of the men as well. They all love me deeply. Maybe they don’t say it directly, but I can pick up on it from their non-verbal queues. They simply want me to go away so they can miss me even more.

yeah this may be hard to fathom, but they use the same NPCs when it’s related to something similar. all the crafting stuff uses the Bright couple, Thomas and Miguel Bright

These are the two I rolled my eyes at, as well. Otherwise, it doesn’t really bother me that much.

If their initial thought was to post on an alt that hasn’t even logged into the actual toon, they are automatically a forum alt in my mind lol

What repeated and explicit romance? “I want a gift for my husband” is one of the quest lines.

You and others keep saying it’s forced and rammed on us and unsubtle, but no one ever shows the quest dialogue they feel actually does this in any way. Care to actually share?

High density? There’s a handful of same sex couples. In an expansion of hundreds of NPCs if not thousands.

Also, shock, the place is full of creatures that have much closer lines between genders or, in the case of dragons, can just be whatever they want. Thus making it far MORE likely that such things would be accepted and not have to be hidden or avoided.

If I go to certain neighborhoods or cities LGBTQIA+ representation is more common…

And again, STILL haven’t seen any actual examples given, just broad swipe statements making claims that I haven’t seen evidence of in the first place.

why should anyone care about your sexuality? You are who you are. I don’t run around saying I’m straight. I just am.

I went to verify this and… I stand corrected! I have always been bad at remembering names…

While this does somewhat aleviate my concern, I do stand by my points, especially regarding the centaur questline feeling very out of place in the context of their culture. Although I will add to the original post to correct this.

I simply remember older romance quests to be more subtle in their phrasing. These new ones seem to make a point in always making sure to dissipate any and all doubt that these two are together, leaving no room for the slightest interpretation. Even when the doubt was almost nonexistant, the simple act of having to “guess” for ourselves made the story feel more involved.

The characters also seem to be less excentric, more bland… As if afraid to risk making a joke out of them. I can’t seem to remember the centaur’s personnalities at all, besides them being in love with each other.

Not really, I really haven’t had a reason to come on the boards until a new expansion came out. I think it’s very possible for the OP to have no visited in a long time.

im here to chew bubblegum and get loot. i have never cared if x character likes x gender. not sure why its so important to everyone to focus on it so much in x hobby.

and yes i get that representation is important but this is a personal hobby, why in the world is gender the focus for people engaging in their hobby?
do we focus on gender in every single hobby on the planet now?
knitting? collecting and polishing shiny stones? card collecting? collecting rare coins?

That’s sweet. I am not so easily convinced. Especially since at the time it was plastered all over the feed.

I asked for even a single actual example and quest dialogue that you feel actually validates this idea of “Forcing” it on us and you respond with more generalities. Interesting.

There culture is a hodge-podge of semi Celtic and Mexican. They celebrate the day of the dead with an actual Ofrenda with Marigolds…

Beyond that, what about the culture makes a marriage out of place? I’ll wait.

I just feel like pointing out, the reason people notice and react to this kind of stuff is because the media it is produced in is not mirrored in “reality”. By which I mean the number of same-sex relationships you encounter in the real world, unless you are actively in communities of gay couples, is so incredibly small by comparison to the rest of the population…yet in games, it’s almost like a 50 / 50 representation, so people NOTICE this because it is not “normal”.

THAT is ‘forced diversity’. When people who want equal representation DON’T want realistic representation.

And on that, I’ll just say if anyone needs fictional characters to be gay to feel valid or real, you need to see a psychologist.

Sincerely,
an old bisexual dude.

Not remotely the case in WoW or Dragonflight, try again.

I’ll save you time. They think it’s too open. Being closeted is what they want. They’ll come up with “reasons” but it’s just excuses to voice displeasure. They won’t admit they find it “icky” because they’re smart enough to recognize it’s out of fashion to be openly hateful.

Apply this to every easily-refuted excuse and complaint that would never ever apply to heterosexual NPC. They aren’t interested in a debate… they just keep moving the goalpost or coming up with a different reason it’s bad except for listing the real reason.

where do you get yur statz from duuuuude? Please provide evidence.

Chunky, chunky chunky… .And plumpy! Plumpy, plumpy!
