A character with that name already exists

My paladin on Grobbulus, ßleu, cannot log in. He was a ghost in Karazhan when I closed the game client because logging out didn’t work. The error now is “A character with that name already exists”. I’ve completely closed and re-opened the client, reset my UI, and waited half an hour. Still getting the error. What do now?

Edit: He was a ghost in Karazhan because he died and I hit the release button when the game server was showing clear signs of instability. He was then stuck as a ghost inside the raid instance.

I am also experiencing this. Died in Stratholme during server lag and got stuck inside the instance as a ghost. Now I can’t log in (on that character only)

Tried exiting game, logging as different characters and the “Reset the user interface” steps here listed here https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/8387

EDIT: Stuck character service failed for me as well

EDIT EDIT: Got in after about 4 hours. Made a DK and leveled it to 60 and then rechecked. Unsure if it was resolved by waiting long enough or my Stuck character tickets I filed

I teleported to ORG and my game froze. Never loaded. So I did a quick close and reloaded the game.
I got stuck on “Logging in to game server”… I tried again and got disconnected.
It took awhile but it finally loaded me to character selection and in an attempt to login it stated “world server down” Or something like that.
Anywho my char isn’t stuck just thought i’d tell about my experience…

However, there are some people with the same issue. My friend is upset b/c his character is a ghost now and getting the same “A character name already exists”.

Same issue. I died in My Hyjal and tried to log back in and got the same error message. Simmonns - Atiesh server (Horde)

Looks like Blizzard will have to manually reset all of us or something…

ok so this is happening to alot of ppl i want to play the 1 character i cant get back in to same issue as the rest of u within the last 30 min

Experiencing the same issue on Atiesh with my Shaman Icetotems. Stuck as a ghost and have followed all steps to fix the issue and nothing.

Same here with my character Cosu-Atiesh, waited around 1h, can login in alts, but my main shows as connected if y try to find him in the “Who?” section

My character Khardone is also having this issue on Grobbulus Horde. any word on solution yet…

I got kicked from the server while buying things and now I cannot login. So looks like i get to submit a 2 week ticket to get my refunds.

Same thing, was on a Flight Path when it went down, cant get back on that character, all other characters work. Palládium - Skyfury
