A brief summary of how Legion Artifacts work in Shadowlands

Hi all–since there seems to be no good place to figure out details for Legion Artifacts post 9.1, here’s the two mechanics that determine it’s iLvl.

  1. It always scales up to 5 iLvls over your current level… (e.g, a level 12 with the Dreadblades would be iLvl 17)
  2. Without any relics equipped, the Artifacts max out at iLvl 20, and with relics equip max out at 20 + any ILvls granted by relics. (E.g, a level 41 mage with Aluneth and two +7 iLvl relics would only have an iLvl 34 Aluneth. worse than any questing weapon. However, a level 20 mage with the same relics would only have an iLvl 25 Aluneth)

It’s sort of a “Limited” heirloom system. Hope that helps!

I’ve just run 3 characters through Legion in Chromie time, and my artifact weapons went all the way up to ilvl 58 when I was lvl 49. They scaled the same as heirloom weapons for me as long as the available relic slots were filled. Not sure what accounts for the difference - were you in Chromie time?

I can confirm Legion artifacts scale higher as well. When I hit level 50, my artifact weapons jumped up to ilvl 70 (you can see them in my profile). It’s why I love Legion for Chromie time - no need for an heirloom weapon.

At the start of shadowlands until a hotfix around late August artifacts (as for a high level) worked like they used to in legion (ilvl cap of 1014) and in bfa (i think 265 or 266). Having an ilvl cap of 80 for SL as I have seen, haven’t gotten warforged mythic argus relics to test yet if it went higher. With that hotfix they changed the cap to ilvl 58, even with ilvl 60 relics socketed. Then with 9.1.5, they appear to have reverted that hotfix and the weapons at least on my level 50+ characters they got their old ilvls back before that late August hotfix.

As for behavior below 45 (or chromie time 49) I guess that is how everyone else has said. I’ve only noticed artifacts being ilvl 20 when picked up on fresh characters when first starting them off in legion. Didn’t care to do anything with them (cause they weren’t my mage tower characters) besides getting the dalaran port and stop that annoying npc from following.
