Zovaal enters Sepulcher and begins to spread his domination magic everywhere. He puts up Anduin as a blocker and some of his other machinations.
We actually kill Anduin because even though Anduin could resist domination, he knows doing so would only prolong us, Azeroth’s Champions, from reaching Zovaal. Anduin’s soul is saved by the Light and Anduin transcends to Naaru form. (This is what the Jailer sensed in Anduin and was scared by him in the cinematic where we escape to Oribos at the beginning of the game).
But, this was enough time for Zovaal to break into the tomb and dominate the Relic of the First Ones which are the “settings” for everything about reality outside of the Zereth Mortis.
The first reality altering tweak Zovaal completes is no more free will - however free will still exists in the Zereth Mortis. (Think of it like the Quantum Realm in MCU.)
Second, there is no definitive line between life and death, so the Shadowlands begins to merge with all the living realms - we cannot return to Azeroth but everything we need will be in Haven (hence the obvious name). Torghast comes crash down into ICC like the beam from the alien ships in ‘Independence Day’. Torghast is now in the place where ICC once was.
This is the time that Blizzard says will pass betwen Anduin and the second part of the raid where we will fight The Lich King and Zovaal himself.
After we defeat Zovaal, we ask the Automa to reset was Zovaal has done. But they do not know how. They only carry out the instructions set by the Relic - reality has been forever distorted by Zovaal. However just like the Lich King, there must always be an arbiter of souls - Sylvanas knowing her fate is doomed back on Azeroth - volunteers an eternity of service.
EDIT
Zereth Mortis is not affected by the blurring of the Shadowlands and the Realms of the Living because it is on a different plane of existence. The Lich King battle is between us and Arthas’ dominated soul haunting the mourne-armor Anduin was wearing. Genn is crowned King of the Eastern Kingdoms and in a gesture, honoring the memory of Anduin, calls a truce with the Horde (opening the way to cross-faction content).
They would never kill Anduin while letting Sylvanas live. Plus, I believe Anduins death would mean the end of the royal bloodline in Stormwind. Can you imagine the alliance player outrage?
Nah, Sylvanas is there when we fight Anduin - I think she sacrifices herself for him which saves him and redeemers her. It’s the reason they didn’t kill her off yet.
Just think about how much Anduin has affected Sylvanas, how he made even her EVIL CORRUPTED SOUL pause and think. Think about how Anduin’s favorite hobby is forgiving people for warcrimes. How much he wants to make peace with the Horde.
yeah i see no reason to let him die, i see a lot of reason to end Sylvanas but even if this a un popular opinion i want her to be redeem and Arthas too…
Dumb enough to be real, I doubt this is the real plot though, I really imagine its going to be we beat him down. Then he breaks free when he’s weakened and is saved.
