8 Positive Effects of Video Games. But wait a Minute?

I ran across a blog on the internet that listed the positive effects of Video gaming.
This is the list:

The most notable positive effects of video gaming include:

1 Improved cognitive abilities
2 Improved problem-solving skills and logic
3 Increased hand-to-eye coordination
4 Greater multi-tasking ability
5 Faster and more accurate decision-making
6 Better eyesight (attention to detail)
7 More physical activity with games that promote physical activity (VR games)
8 Enhanced prosocial behaviors

I agreed with all of the claims until I hit number 8. Enhanced Prosocial Behaviors ?
Really? Really? I broke out laughing.

So As Wow players, what do you think of these claims. And specifically number 8 ?

i see this in more of a RTS and FPS games then wow
but number 8 must be a new one from the redcross idea in FPS lol

Not all gaming communities are created equal. Palia is the exact opposite of WoW— and it’s not even released yet.

this is the red cross i was talking about lol

Some of those maybe, but better hand-to-eye coordination from using a mouse and keyboard? Faster decision making? Better eyesight?

Come on now, that’s just a load of malarkey.

faster decision and the eye sight is true in rts and fps games
there have been studies done about it

Everything on that list you can learn elsewhere. The only thing really video games teach you is a higher chance to survive a zombie apocalypse.
But you’ll die of dysentery anyways.

… oh lord.

That isnt relevant though? Almost everything in life can also be learned elsewhere. Few few things have anything they teach you completely unique to them.

I think WoW can definitely teach people to be social. But I can see why you wouldnt think so. You dont seem to be a very social person over all.

I imagine it can be true if you are a guild or community leader, because you have to work with people and resolve issues.

Others can be true as well. I definitely do some analysing and planning when I play WoW, and there’s definitely cognitive effect in it all. So, it’s definitely better than doing nothing or scrolling social media.

Then again some games can be pretty dumb as well. I stopped playing Diablo for the most part because I found that I was akin to playing slot machine over and over at some point. I also don’t like shooters, because they rely on physical motor skill way too much, which I would rather develop playing an instrument, and have something to show for it.

To be honest, I’m not sure what that jargon is supposed to even mean.

ā€œProsocialā€ is what gets me. Why ā€˜pro’?
Imo, could just say ā€œImprove social behaviour.ā€

consults the Great Google

ā€œProsocial behavior refers to a range of positive behaviors including positive interactions (e.g., friendly play or peaceful conflict resolutions), altruism (e.g., sharing, offering help), and behaviors that reduce stereotypes (Mares and Woodard, 2007).ā€

All of them look right, even number 8.

Reason being is there’s still a lot of folks out there that care for others, and do things for the community that they are apart of. There are some charity events that are ran within wow too. Folks can be massively accepting of others and allow for personal growth… just depends upon where you look / where you go.

Yes, as you are the pinnacle of anti-social troglodytes I’m sure you would laugh at the thought playing online games with other players helps one socialize better than not socializing at all. The rest of us, thankfully, are not you.

I’m antisocial af in wow these days because that’s the meta for pugs, but when I was a teenager applying to and climbing the ranks in guilds in tbc and wrath I’m sure the social skills I had to practice then helped me in future jobs and even the military to some degree. As a kid, just having the confidence to speak to adults like they weren’t aliens meant a lot

I believe this post is a demonstration of social behavior that is not prosocial behaviour?

I mean. So is the OPs.

Seeing from the results my bro plays due to a stroke yes it does help to a limit, mainly it keeps him going and trying .

As for 8 well that requires social skills which most players don’t have.

Thank you for this. I was having doubts about WoW being a good hobby, gaming in general, in terms on getting some good or improvement from it.
