8.1 discussion 4

I capped the last one so I guess this is on me.

Tell us how you really feel about Junker Gnomes.
I feel nothing about junker gnomes, which is the entire problem with them as an allied race. It would be void elves all over again, but worse.
I did not want to make a gnome before. Adding some slightly less human components really doesn't change anything. Will be the least played allied race by a mile if it makes it in.

Actually I would have considered gnome if they had the druid class.

Why is Blizzard gating druids behind tall races? Do they really hate short people that much? Night Elves are the shortest race to have access to druid.
I prefer Junk in the Trunk Gnomes.

I'm looking forward to using Junker Gnomes to Syncro Summon Junk Destroyer.
On one hand, it's kind of disappointing that the one time they decide to turn the spotlight on gnomes, it's for junker gnomes and not the original.

On the other hand, I'm a sucker for cyborgs and I'm pretty sure regular gnomes will get some new lore out of this.

All in all, I find it to be better than nothing but not nearly as good as it could have been.

EDIT: If, and this is unlikely, the theory about this being an introduction to the tinker class instead of a new allied race is true I will be very pleased.

I guess I feel kind of ambivalent?

We don't know anything about Junker Gnomes except that they are Gnomes who have cyborg parts.

...which feels less like an Allied Race and more like a neat skin for Gnomes.

...but skins were basically what Allied Races were supposed to be, originally, so I guess it fits?

Actually, when you get down to it, most of the Allied Races are just neat skins with the exceptions of the Nightborne and the Lightforged. Those are the only two Allied Races with actual story behind them.

The Highmountain are just Tauren with voice acting, the Void Elves are just whatever, the Dark Irons have always been around and the less said about the Mag'har lore, the better.
I haven't unlocked either Dark Irons or Mag'har yet, though, and it'll be some time before I do. The idea of doing a massive grind so I can have the privilege of doing another massive grind on the character I did the massive grind to unlock is just...ugh.

Given the quality of said lore, I think I speak for the entire Gnome community when I say "Not like this! NOT LIKE THIS!"

I think it really depends at this point. Blizzard seems to have done some excellent work when it comes to the introduction of the new civilizations we see in Zandalar and Kul'tiras but a pretty meh job, to say the least, when it comes to certain Allied Races.

I honestly don't know, but for some reason I'm actually hopeful. Maybe that's because I'm not with the camp that believes that Blizzard completely ignores all the feedback given by players. I think they just plan things out maybe years in advance and kind of panic fix stuff they thought people would love, but received a huge backlash, in a stressful manner.

Call me crazy, but I think Blizzard is listening to our concerns and complaints more than we think. And in all honesty, I don't know if they're good at solving these issues in the correct way.

So, I guess it depends on whether this is a crowd-pleaser move or a move that makes sense lorewise and is done with love and care. If they are adding all this new stuff to stop people from spamming about the complete disregard of gnomes in recent lore, then I'm against giving us anything unless it's something that's fleshed out in a way that makes sense to the story. If it's a cool, unique idea that they've been working on for a while, then that's cool.

Junker gnomes might be a hard addition to accept, but hey, so were the Draenei and they're one of my favorite races now.

The zone writing has been very good this expac. But so far, every allied race scenario has been insultingly stupid and several did brutal violence to the established lore. At this point, I don't expect much from any future allied races.
Remember when we got new races just by purchasing the expansion and we didn't have to go through grinds to be able to play the thing we paid for?
It's pretty appropriate for any allied race associated with Gnomes to have Junk in the name. I look forward to the inevitable Trash Goblins.
I really don't mind the unlock requirements for allied races. Back when sub-races were a matter of speculation, I thought that tying them to difficult in-game achievements would be a reasonable way to institute them; it makes having a character of that race a point of prestige, like a rare mount or transmog piece.

My only dissatisfaction with the system as it stands now is that you unlock it with just a grind, and just of current content, so it's not anything particularly special and most people who are currently playing will naturally unlock them with time anyway. I think it'd be cooler if they'd make allied races of some of the older, established members of the Alliance and Horde (jinyu, hozen, Wildhammers, ogres, quel'dorei, taunka, Broken, etc) and tie them to older achievements rooted in previous expansions. Things people would have to go out of their way to do in addition to current WQ zones.

But that's just a quibble; the system as it stands works pretty well. No, I think the real problem with it is how every time Blizzard adds an allied race they strap on their cleats and stomp on the lore like it's grapes in an arcwine vat.
I don't mind the unlock requirements at all. However, the heritage armor system combined with all of the leveling changes feels like a desperate attempt to generate foot traffic and activity in outdated and, frankly, poorly aged content. The game is absolutely atrocious from 60-80 right now with the low efficiency potential of Burning Crusade and I swear the tuning is still off in Wrath of the Lich King.

I do take some umbrage on behalf of others with the fact that Allied Races are a back of the box Battle for Azeroth attention grabber and the core four are pretty agonizingly out of reach for players attempting to jump in.

Saw a comment the other day that it's really hard to sell people on a 15 year old game which is part of the struggles of modern World of Warcraft - stuff like this really doesn't help.
Personally I would have preferred that the 20-110 grind of an AR granted a title and achieve, instead of the armor and achieve. The armor should just be an unlock along with the race itself, especially with the slog of a questline some of them entail beyond the rep grind.

As for more 8.1 news, I don't know if this made it into the last thread before cap:

https://www.wowhead.com/news=288287/mounts-in-8-1-ptr-build-28294-jaina-mythic-siltwing-albatross

Some new Dubloon mount rewards, some new weapon models, and mechanical mounts/pets.

In class news, Bladestorm is getting a damage nerf, and Execute will refund less Rage (for Arms). The cooldown on Arcane Torrent is getting bumped up, and Troll Berserking got a nerf.

Hold on, just woke up, junker gnomes are confirmed?

If you omit the Pandaren (Which was just one race for both factions), the last time we just were given new, faction specific races without a grind to unlock them was eight years ago.

And there's plenty of people who would argue Gilneas/Kezan-The Lost Isles constitutes "a grind".
Junker gnomes are confirmed by a small quest line and some datafiles that we haven't seen anything of, yet.

In comparison, the Vulpera, who are speculated to be the next Horde allied race, have a rep behind them, a defined relationship to the Horde, and a strong aversion to the Alliance in 8.1 thanks to certain furry burners and dialogue in the aftermath of the Siege of Dazar'alor.
They'll announce Vulpera as an allied race at Blizzcon, calling it.
At least we were given a inkling of a hint that Junker Gnomes exist via a small, disposable quest.

For a while there I was seriously concerned Blizzard would do us dirty and just make Night Warrior Night Elves our new Allied Race.
